My 100% original 6,000 mile 1972 CB500 Four is my favorite bike. It's 4/4 stock exhaust make music all of the way up to redline and I love the way it handles. However, mine won't come close to lifting a wheel. If you are so inclined, you could try some real abuse to the clutch and driveline components and clutch it up. The bike makes 50 horsepower at best, weighs almost 500 pounds wet and has tall gearing. It was never intended as anything more than a smooth, reliable commuter.
This first bike = no wheelies, but 10 times more ridable, better mannered, stops, goes, and is a joy to ride.
This second bike = a monster, prefers 1 wheel, won't stop, smokes, rattles, and shakes like a junkie. 10 horsepower supposedly separates the two....I somehow doubt that. It did 12.7 and 110 in the 1/4 mile and in 1969/1970 was the fastest production vehicle money could buy. It needs no clutch, no fork compression, just hold the throttle on in 1st or 2nd and it will spot possums in the tree tops for you. I also have a 3,000 mile 1972 Yamaha R5C 350 twin and it doesn't come close.
Seriously, enjoy the bike within it's design limits, but get a SV650 or something similar if wheelies are a priority.
Regards, Gordon
