Wheelies

Just a question out of curiosity.....is a perfectly tuned and running cb550 capable of pulling a wheelie? A stock cb, not a modified one.

I would suppose so, just about any bike is capable...

i guess capable is the wrong word....i know modern bikes it just takes a flick of the wrist. The cb just seems so heavy in the front end to me.

If you are talking about a roll-on wheelie, I'd say it is unlikely.

I have a video taken by my son that shows me getting my front wheel about a half inch off the ground. Does that count?   :-\

Only half an inch?  ;D

I could so run with that (but I won't)

Roll along at 10 mph in first gear. Rev to 7000. Drop the clutch. It will wheelie. If you want a vintage stock wheelie machine. Get a 70's Yamaha RD 350..    Effortless, clutchless power wheelies.

Almost the same for the SR500.   ;D

My 100% original 6,000 mile 1972 CB500 Four is my favorite bike. It's 4/4 stock exhaust make music all of the way up to redline and I love the way it handles. However, mine won't come close to lifting a wheel. If you are so inclined, you could try some real abuse to the clutch and driveline components and clutch it up. The bike makes 50 horsepower at best, weighs almost 500 pounds wet and has tall gearing. It was never intended as anything more than a smooth, reliable commuter.

This first bike = no wheelies, but 10 times more ridable, better mannered, stops, goes, and is a joy to ride.

This second bike = a monster, prefers 1 wheel, won't stop, smokes, rattles, and shakes like a junkie. 10 horsepower supposedly separates the two....I somehow doubt that. It did 12.7 and 110 in the 1/4 mile and in 1969/1970 was the fastest production vehicle money could buy. It needs no clutch, no fork compression, just hold the throttle on in 1st or 2nd and it will spot possums in the tree tops for you. I also have a 3,000 mile 1972 Yamaha R5C 350 twin and it doesn't come close.

Seriously, enjoy the bike within it's design limits, but get a SV650 or something similar if wheelies are a priority.

Regards, Gordon

I have an illness as my wife puts it. That garage is now over-full and I've got them in my home's garage and in a separate storage facility. They keep finding me somehow....

The wife says "if just one more comes home"

I might miss her

Thanks everyone. i wasn't really looking to do wheeliies....was just curious of the power available. I don't need 4 wheels to be happy, but i like to keep 2 on the ground!  ;D

I bet that Mach III would wheelie like a champ. . .. I have read some of the reviews from back in the day, in the vintage motorcycle magazines i have been listing on eBay. It was like one of THE fastest bike at that time and quite raved about. . . . and a 2 stroke, too?! wild.. ..

the mach111 was known as the widow maker in NZed when it came out.
RD350's, as well as being easy to lift the front end also had the annoying habit off seizing the throttle wide open on very cold days, not pretty to watch when some poor bastard takes off fast for a bit of a show and the show has it's own ending ;D

yikes!   me thinks I will stick with the CB500 then. .  .lol. ..  plenty o' power for me (then again, my previous riding experience was with a 50cc moped and my mountain bike - a bit less on the power to weight ratio)  ;)

Almost any bike is "capable" of pulling a wheelie, it's more up to the guy who's riding it.  ;D
