Appraisal for insurance
« on: July 26, 2016, 11:28:05 AM »
With my project complete, I called my insurance company(State Farm) for a new policy.  After some discussion, the agent stated that the best way to insure my bike was via a Classic Car policy.  With this type of policy, I need an appraisal for my custom build.  I know what I paid for parts and have receipts for all of it.

Does anyone know where I can get an appraisal?

Curious about this as well, how to determine a good appraiser for a classic Honda and what a fair price for appraisal is. Some agreed value insurance want an appraisal, others don't care unless you request some absurdly high value that maybe an early sandcast would justify. Last insurance company I talked to wanted an appraisal despite having a fully documented restoration, receipts, hundreds of pictures, etc. I asked if appraisal typically covered replacement cost rather than market price, as I have a spreadsheet itemizing every parts order (with receipts) and not sure how to quantify a winter worth of labor most nights as I didn't track labor hours. They said appraisals are normally for replacement cost of that specific vehicle, but not covering labor. That seems insane that they wouldn't insure for any labor costs, as how else are you going to get a brand new 45 year old bike?

In any event, whether agreed value or not I think it would be hard to dispute the replacement cost of the bike provided an extensive level of documentation specifically with receipts for everything. They wouldn't have much of a case to offer less than the cost of bike+parts.

Dunk, we're on the same page.  When I originally called, the agent asked for original MSRP value.  I asked to insure it for more than that since it was a highly customized bike.  She gave me a rough estimate of $104 for the year to appraise it at 10k...but I need an appraisal stating that it's worth 10k.  It makes sense for fraud reasons.  As for insuring the labor...yeah, I didn't even think I'd be able to factor that in to the policy.  However, I'm sure a good appraiser would factor that in to the cost...somehow...some way.

I need an appraisal to title a frame in Michigan. There is a vintage cycle shop local to me that will do it inexpensively that Im going to use. Got to be something within a reasonable distance that understands the costs involved in vintage bikes that can help. In many cases it needs to be something on official letterhead with a few statements about value, thats all.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.
