M-unit turn signal issue.
« on: July 26, 2016, 09:24:38 PM »
Hey guys. I am in the process of wiring a new harness for my bike with an M-unit and M button. The issue i am having is that when i select a left turn everything works fine, but when i slide the switch to the neutral position the lights continue to blink. If i move the switch for a right turn, the lights come on, but as with the left side will not stop when i move the switch to the neutral position. The only way i can cancel the lights is to momentarily switch the turn signal switch to the affected side and then off again quickly.

Am i missing something obvious? or is this something i need to program in the config settings? ( i know the m-unit has an auto off function that should cancel the turn lights after a set period of time, perhaps this is where my problem lies?)

Thanks for any light you can shed on this for me!!

Does the M unit require the use of momentary switches?  Sounds like that could be your problem.  Most metric switches are N.O./N.C. center off style.  If the M unit requires momentary switches it will see a metric switch as constantly applying a single, instead of a single pulse.  Just a thought.

M unit does in fact use momentary.

I had this issue also when I was wiring in my handlebar controls on my cb400f. The way I fixed this was to go into the m unit settings and change the handlebar control section.

7.6 Handle Bar Controls
Three different types of handle bar controls are compatible with m-Unit. The particular type which
will be used with m-unit must set in the setup menu.
Configuration A) – Push Button Controls
- turn lights left - push button
- turn lights right - push button
- low beam / high beam - push button
- start - push button
- horn - push button
Configuration B) – Harley Davidson and BMW controls
- turn lights left - push button
- turn light right - push button
- low beam / high beam - switch
- start - push button
- horn - push button
Configuration C) – most Japanese and European motorcycles
- turn lights left / right - 3 way switch
- low beam / high beam - switch
- start - push button
- horn - push button
configuration D) – new Ducati models
- turn lights left / right - 3 way switch
- low beam / high beam - push button
- start - push button
- horn - push button
In case of using the OEM handle bar controls together with m-Unit; head light flashing push button
is not applicable. There is also no possibility to switch the parking light by the m-Unit.

The handlebar switch configuration is not always involved when the M-Button is used. And the M-Button is often a source of other issues. I not only don't use them, I discourage others from doing so. But do insure you're using C as the switch type.

Another option you should also set up in the M-Unit menu is auto cancel of your indicators. That is adjustable in 10" intervals, from 10"-50". And you might swap your brake light function from stock "ON" to strobe or strobe then ON.

You don't need to do that either.

Turn the key OFF. Make a small jumper wire, bare strands on one end, a ring terminal on the other. Attach the ring to a solid ground somewhere. As you turn on the key, the lights on the M-Unit will begin to cycle. WHILE ITS CYCLING, touch the bare end of your jumper to the screw on the CONFIG port and hold it there. This trips the m-unit into SETUP mode. By tapping the same screw with your jumper, it will index through the menus, and you double tap the screw to move to the Option side of the menu.

Watch the lights on the left. It progresses from top to bottom to indicate which menu option you are on, then the light will switch to the right (with the double tap) to show you which configuration you are choosing. Double tap again to jump back to the left, and tap to move to next menu. When you're done, cycle the power. Finished.

Even with a small momentary switch, the selection behavior is the same, you just don't make a jumper wire.

Worked like a charm! it took awhile to get the timing right to access the programming menu but once i was in everything went according to plan. Thanks for the assistance!
