CB550 rocker cover torque - seriously?
« on: July 30, 2016, 01:17:15 PM »
Book says 5-8 foot/lbs of torque for rocker cover blots. Seriously? My torque wrench doesn't even go that low. More generally, I find all the torques listed in the book - especially roughly 16 ft/lbs for crankcase and head bolts, to be ridiculously low. Am I wrong?

You need to borrow or buy a correct torque wrench for the smaller bolts. Torque wrenches are not a one size fits all sorry to say.

Clutch basket bolts always amazed me. Such low torque for the bolts that hold together the assembly that transmits all that power and torque and shock....crazy.

Dude... go buy a decent (preferably calibrated) 1/4" drive inch/lbs. torque wrench.  Others will tell you things like, "just get them snug and add 1/4 turn" or some such. This is why calibrated tools were invented in the first place. "Snug" to one person is "OOPS I just broke the damn bolt" to another and "the thing leaks and the camshaft leaps around" to the third.
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

My rocker leaked when I used torque specs. I went around again when it was warm and snugged them a bit more.

I bought an inch/lbs torque wrench for my honda's, but, seriously, only for tensioning the cylinder heads down!
