what is the best way to restore a fuel tank.
« on: July 29, 2016, 07:23:29 PM »
hi. Am quite new to forum. Purchased a 1975 CB750F a few months ago from an estate. It was sitting in an extreme  hoarders double garage for something more than 17 years. Has 7900 miles showing on speedo (If original) and I think mostly original. Was on side stand all that time with fuel in it. (dried up now) This caused fuel tank to completely rust out on that side and bottom and also the 2 carbs are real bad on that side. I purchased a used tank from a 1978 CB750F to replace it which appears to be in much better shape but paint is bubbling along bottom edge.  Suspect pin holes starting. What is the best way to patch these tanks and line them. I have soldered automotive and small engine tanks before but did not have to worry about painting them and welding causes warping. I found a cycle shop that say they can have the tank lined with an aviation quality liner but don't know what it is. Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Welcome to sohc4!

Tank repair and lining has been discussed at length here.  A search will find you some good write ups and reviews of many different approaches.

Nice bike.

+75, that is there have to be 75 posts about this, minimum. You will find this crew incredibly willing to help, especially if you master the use of search first.

Welcome.

Are tanks that rare to come by where you are? I only ask because I think most would advise a good, solid tank with no issues is always preferable to a lined one.

If you're going the liner route, I would go with Caswell or POR-15. I used the latter in my Norton over ten years ago and it's still holding up with no signs of flaking.

As with most things, preparation is key.

If the paint is already bubbling, then lining it will only prevent further seepage, but the paint will fail ultimately. So I'm not sure how you will salvage the paint in the long run.

Caswell for a liner, do it yourself, and follow the directions exactly. There's another thread at this very moment for reference:

Thanks for the replies to my post. Sorry about not checking previous posts . Was not sure how to search specific topics but have since found out. Am excited about this project but can only do a bit at a time as time and money allows. Love to find a solid tank but they seam to be rare for the 750 super sport at least in Canada.

Good man. I'm a citizen at a half-dozen forums, this is the best. Master search and your questions/answers will add to the knowledge base :-).

I have a passel of tanks, not sure how I'd recognize what you need. Post a photo with whatever distinguishing marks it has and I'll see if I can help.

Thanks NobleHops. I will try to get back to you with a pic. of tank. Just got this used tank and have not had time to see just how bad it is but if there is on hole there is likely more to fallow.
