Exhaust studs

Hey all,
When I had the engine disassembled on my 77 cb550k I got a local shop to install my exhaust studs onto the head. Didn't think anything of it, but when I went to install my headers I discovered that the tech had installed some of the studs backwards (!!!). Now the exposed side is really short.
I was able to install the headers, but only barely. Now I'm looking into replacing my flanges since they're kinda rusty, and figured I might try and fix those studs myself. Hoping they didn't loctite them on, but I suppose we'll see.
In any event, are there any tips of removing these from the head, and for that matter, installing them? I'm kind of worried about not getting them torqued down properly and having a rattly exhaust. But more importantly I'm worried about snapping the studs and needing to replace the head.

Apply PB Blaster or Kroil at the base of the studs the night before you plan on removing them. The day of removal, apply more. Put two nuts on the stud, and jam them together. Use a wrench on the inboard nut to back them out. Sometimes it's helpful to use a heat gun on the head, getting it nice and hot.

Thanks for the reply. Any tips for getting them installed correctly? Or is a finger tightening enough and then torquing them down with the headers all that's required?

If they dont come out easily,leave them and use thick washers or shims behind the nuts.

To install properly, simply apply a bit of Red LocTite, and screw them in. They don't require significant torque, and the Red Lactate will hold them amply.

To remove, heat the ever-loving bejeezus out of them with penetrating oil added. If they were installed with any thread lock, the heat will break it down and assist you in avoiding tearing out the threads.

+1 double nut trick.  Since they were recently installed, should come out fairly easy.

Or take the bike back and have him do it!

First figure out on here how long the stickout is and how much threads..
In case they are different studs . I would think aftermarket. Exhaust. May have thinner flanges than stock.

Probably best to leave them in and check the clearance on the replacement flanges. I would take back but it's been years since they installed them, I've just made do with them as is. But now that I'm looking into replacing those flanges, it's coming back to bite me.

Definitely not worth risking breaking them off in the head. I'll just check the replacement size and mill it down if I have to. Unless anyone knows where to find shorter exhaust collars? I think that's really the limiting factor.
