What mods&specs would give me the best fuel economy?
« on: July 06, 2016, 08:53:59 PM »
I'm just wanting to to get some practical advice on increasing the MPG of my 77-750A. Like what would the best sprocket ratio and chain. Tire size and spark plugs. I've done some research on the type of electronic ignition, some imperical data would be helpful though.
I'm an enthusiasts, first real motorcycle I've owned.

Riding style will have the biggest impact on MPG.  If you are heavy on the throttle your bike will be at the low end of the MPG range which is typically 40 to 45 mpg.  I have heard of some of latter years with leaner jetting getting close to 50 mpg.

If you ride in a full tuck your MPG goes way up.  This true for any bike.  A helpful resource is http://ecomodder.com.  They have a post on a ninja 250 that gets super high mpg, but most of the boost was in ridding style ie. full tuck.

Make sure tire are aired up helps too.  Sprocket ratios might help some.  Craig vetter is big into hyper milling and is an advocate of keeping the RPMs down.

That auto is a bit under-powered as the torque converter uses up a good deal of power so I am not sure changing the sprockets is the best idea.

There's no real magic bullet here. Depends on how far you are willing to go:

>Conservative riding style. That means easy on the throttle when accelerating up to speed. This is probably the hardest part for me, since part of the fun of motorcycling is their rate of acceleration!
>Keep it tuned up.
>Final sprocket ratios are a compromise based on your riding conditions. Urban, stop and go traffic would be different than primarily highway/rural riding.
>Ceramic wheel bearings are expensive but offer the least rolling resistance...
>Go on a diet. You can even put the bike on a diet by shedding non-critical parts, or substituting lighter components.
>Supposedly non-o-ring chains offer less initial rolling resistance, but they require more maintenance.
>Always ride downhill with the wind at your back!  ;)
