Oil leak at base of cylinder - use sealant to plug
« on: July 30, 2016, 12:46:42 AM »
I've changed all the gaskets but i still have a leak at the bottom of the cylinder head.  I just want to plug it.  The leak is quite consistent at the centre front to the left.  What sealant should i use to plug this pesky oil leak?  i was thinking of a Permatex black silicone.

Oh dear God, please don't! If its leaking, then you have likely missed installing the o-rings around the studs, or other orifices. What year and model engine are you dealing with?

and even if you do, It won't stop the oil.
You'll never be able to get all the oil out of the leaking are so no way the sealer will hold...
Only way is to do it proper and get the head etc back of.

If not installed yet, get a framekit, perfect time to do and save yourself a few hours of your time..

It's an 1981 CB650. I've pulled it apart already and not interested in doing it again. Needs a complete recondition but I don't have the money to do that .

You can properly repair the engine with it in the frame. Or live with the leak. Applying silicone won't accomplish anything other than make a mess.

oh come on CalJ!  Don't be like that!  Maybe crazy glue would work, or perhaps kitchen window caulking.  Have YOU ever tried these ?  IF not, how do you know they won't work?

I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

I can honestly admit to having never tried to shortcut anything, including Kitchen Caulk for an engine leak. I know of only one way to do things: properly to the best of my ability the first time so I NEVER have to do it again.

Not my bike, not my choice.

many have tried this but I think it nearly always fails - the sealer would need to be on the inside behind the leak for it to work... how about the cotton rope (changed often) trick? Or just a quick wipe down after every ride...
