Carb rebuild to jet or not to jet
« on: July 30, 2016, 06:05:39 PM »
So I'm getting into my recent barn find. Pulled the carbs off and started cleaning. Kind of stalled there as I have been reading opinions on what/how to do.

My plan was to buy a rebuild kit with jets and rubber then, I noticed there is a big range in pricing. Kits can be had from $15 each up to $30 each. Wanna do it right but don't want to pay double if it's not necessary. Thoughts?

Also, I have seen a few opinions suggesting to clean what is in there, don't replace. Ok so...here I am in a debate...

The rubber internals seem hard and I'd be surprised if it seals well. Should/could I just replace the rubber?

Thanks for any help. Anxious to get to the next step.

Note that this bike (1975 CB550F) has 16,500 miles but the last 1,000 since 1987. Pretty positive it has sat a long time.

You should be able to save your current brass jets and reuse them.  And if you are careful, you might reuse the gaskets.  I try to stick with Keihin rebuild parts, if possible regardless of cost.

Replace the rubber, keep the brass, with the only exception being the float needles and seats (these items truly wear and are maintenance items). Either use genuine Honda parts, or if you must go aftermarket, at least verify that the rubber is Viton. I used non-Viton rubber carb bits that turned to goo within a week upon exposure to 10% ethanol laced fuel...  :(

Thanks for the opinions guys! I'll try to find some OEM rebuild parts without jets. I saw a cleaning tool with needle small pokers and brushes. May get one of those on order too...
