lugage rack options please
« on: July 31, 2016, 01:09:15 PM »
Hi there

I need to put a new luggage rack on my CB750 and would like to know of some places to buy them.

I've had a Ventura rack on there for a couple of years and it broke for the second time yesterday.  I had covered 100km's before I got off the bike and realised my bag was missing along with my phone etc.

So I may need something a little stronger than the pissy little tubing of the Ventura rack system.

Thanks for any tips on where to buy one.

Have you considered a magnetic tank bag? That's  what I have used on my last two bikes and continue to use even after installing a rear rack.

I carry probably a bit too much stuff for a tank bag.

I have a sauce bottle with 500ml of oil. I have a 2L fuel can (that I can leave at home if I need to save weight).  Inner tube and some tools including a small compressor.

I could probably just take a tube repair kit and hand pump ditch the fuel as it's only incase I come across stranded dudes which has happened 3 times.

I think a luggage rack is needed for when I go away for the weekend though

Holy cow! were you able to recover your bag and phone?

I made my own brackets to mount a set of Pelican 1560 cases. The trunk is a generic JC Whitney piece that will hold two full face helmets. The bracket for the trunk is a simple pair of crossover brackets between the Pelican case brackets. The Pelican case bracket is a simple piece of 1/8" angle iron that mounts at the upper shock stud and the bolt for the rear fender. I used a piece of 3/4" tube steel to join the two brackets in front of the taillight. Another piece of tube steel extends down behind each case to further stabilize the cases. I did 3000 miles (4800 km) without issue:

I found my luggage rack by running a perpetual "Followed Search" on Ebay.  It has taken a year or so once or twice and I have had to give up when the bidding was going past $220 - that, was insanity.  Typically, I spend 50-70 bucks or so.

But eventually, a luggage rack will show up on Ebay.  All of my Honda bikes now have racks if they were not originally equipped with racks and I have found that a company called "Triple-A" made the best of them back in the 70's.  The chrome was good and the rack will be embossed with the names of the bikes that the rack fits.

I got the bag and phone back.

It was about 7am and the bloke who found it was on his way out for the day.  He went and found the phone in the bag and rang my house to leave a message.  I swung by his place in the evening with a box of beer and bottle of burbon.

I don't know what is worse the $'s to replace everything or the hassle of not having any phone numbers, emails or lost photo's.

I'm going to try work out how to back up my phone and save all the contents onto the computer or something.

Need a stronger rack or carry less stuff.

Racks for the K are fairly common on Ebay and Craigslist.  Finding one for my F took me 8 months of relentless daily searches, and in the end I got it for a fair price from  someone who  didn't even know what it was.
