CB 750 Project 2 - The Bug has Taken a Bite
« on: January 18, 2017, 10:43:10 PM »
The first project is not quite complete and I am already thinking about where to start on the second one. it won't start too quickly as I am determined to have the last few things on the first bike done before I get too serious on this one. Once again I don't have a complete bike to start with, but I have a frame, suspension, wheels and tank from 1978 Police bike, the compliance plate reads 'CB750P'. The frame has had a lot of tabs removed including rear pegs mounts and center stand already by the PO so this is definitely a solo seat build.

I have also got an engine that is almost finished that didn't go in the first build. it's an 836 with a ported head and upgraded cam, just need to work out what carbs are going to be best.

I have certainly learnt many things from the first build and still have a lot to learn, I will put a lot more planning into this one and will also do a full assemble with the frame as is and then pull it all apart before painting.

The frame doesn't look to be any different from a standard frame except for provisions for some bolt on bits, but the tank is definitely a later 'F' style tank but I think they where already fitted to the 78K, but it looks like it might be wider and longer than the stock tank? look at the photos and let me know. The front is twin disc on spokes which I have been told did not come out any of the K models and I think the forks and brakes are F2 but again not sure yet.

I am thinking of changing out the stock oil tank and fitting something similar to the unit I saw on a CR750 replica except without the filler in the middle of the seat. Also going to look at a moto gadget unit for all the controls and ignition. I would also like to make up some slightly rear mounted foot pegs but haven't read much on this with drum brakes but I can't see why not. I also have a crazy idea of changing the swing arm, I have a unit that cam of a Suzuki, GS 1000 I think and although it is a little bit longer it will also allow for a larger rear wheel, and yes I also know that all that will change the handling of the bike but I will also do some calculations before I go ahead. Sometimes you just never know until you try.

I am going to paint the tank a pearl white colour with some bronze colour pin stripes, just because most of it will be ex cop bike, and  the frame and other bits in a gum metal grey colour (maybe).

The width at the pivot point is slightly narrower and I have a shaft and adapters that apparently suit but haven't tried them yet. But the shock mounts are further out and I am not sure how vertical they have to be?
