BARKER's 1974 CB750K - STUMPED!! JULY 22, 2017
« on: August 07, 2016, 07:13:47 AM »
I'VE STARTED DOCUMENTING SOME OF MY CB750 JOURNEY ON YOUTUBE!   link here --->: My YouTube Channel (contains CB750 stuff!)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I've been looking for an older CB750 for a while. About 2 weeks ago I brought this home. A 74' in Freedom Green.

I bought it off a friend of a friend for $750.

It's got a low 14,000 miles on the odometer, but it's lived a hard life. Many pieces have been replaced or repaired poorly.

The front fender isn't original...

Neither is the exhaust...(it's from a 77-78,  but wasn't converted to the later style clamping system)

The starter idler/reduction gear was toast when I bought it too. Many teeth were cleaned out from under the alternator cover. Hopefully nothing was sucked into places it shouldn't have been.

Kick start works though. Started quite easily. Idle needs some work though.

The paint is great...however the tank is not. It's got a considerable ding in the front on the right side.

The plan for now is just to do a tune up and ride it some before the snow flies.

Long term plans: On one hand I want to restore it to new on the other hand I do enjoy modifying things. The cafe/brat stuff is pretty appealing to me.

Or... maybe just a lightly modified, fairly stock, ride-able bike.  ;D

It came with a title AND a safety inspection sticker that's good for 2 years!

Fixed one of the broken light bulb sockets on the left rear tail light last night, but still have a strange problem...

Right side turn indicators blink faster than the left. All of them are illuminated, so tonight I'm going to quickly check the types of bulbs and how well they are grounded.

Pretty sure I'm going to bob the rear fender. It's hard to see in the first pic (of the first post) that the rear fender and especially the rear taillight mount were smooshed pretty good at some point. So bobbed fender and a new lower profile brake light will be first on the modifications list.

From the pictures it looks pretty clean, nice score! Your flasher unit may be broken. You can get a replacement pretty cheap at any auto parts store to check.

Made a little progress in the last couple of weeks. Basic tune up stuff (so nothing pic worthy).

- Oil and filter changed
- Repaired another broken rear tail light bulb socket
- Checked and measured the points
- Inspected and gapped the plugs (3 out of 4 were about .015"-.020" too wide...)

Seems to start and idle a touch better. Lots of racket in the engine though, so I'm hoping to take a little of that out with a valve and cam chain adjustment.

Ride that one and find a crappier one to convert to a brat or cafe.

Some disappointment tonight when I went to install my new to me starter and idler gear (covered in the tech section of the forums).

However I did manage to do a simple chain and sprockets inspection and adjustment.

Also troubleshot another broken signal light grounding tab.

Learning lots about the bike though. I'm pretty limited in the motorcycle ownership department but love making things new(ish) again. My other (and first bike) is an 84' cb450sc.

Got a new to me idler gear and starter. The thing starts like a champ again... when the battery hasn't discharged itself. The battery that came with the bike can't hold a charge for more that 3 days just sitting on my work bench (recommendations on a decent replacement?).

Still doing basic maintenance stuff though. Chain inspection, adjustment, cleaning and lube. Went to check the valve clearances but I don't have a set of feeler gauges that I want to bend up to fit down in the tappet holes. I'll be looking into a better set for that job.

Got the cam chain adjusted too. Simple stuff.

Does anyone recognize the seat (see first post) ? I'd like to know the history behind it. I'm probably not going to be keeping it in the long run though...

Get a Yuasa AGM for battery. fortnine.ca used to be canadasmotorcycle.ca Input your bike and they send the correct one. Super quick.

I'm just outside of Windsor. I've got relatives up in Hampton, Sussex and Petitcodiac.

I've been building an order for FortNine for a while, just nhaven't pulled the trigger yet. The prices look decent for the Yuasa AGM high performance battery.

Cool. I'm in Hampton right now for work. That battery is what I ordered after lead acid one kicked the bucket last year. Got to me in two days.

If your carbs are nice and clean and you have done the valve and cam chain adjustments the icing on the cake will be a carb synch.

Well I completed the valve adjustment last night. It seemed pretty easy to do.

Went to give it a kick (battery can't hold a charge anymore) and it started kind of hard. Turns out that cylinder #2 isn't firing even after a quick clean (cylinder #3 was the same a while back, but I cleaned it and it came back to life).

It has spark, but the plug is black and wet. Turns out all of the plugs are pretty fouled... and they're all Champion RA8HC's which I'm reading are the totally incorrect plug. ARRGGGH!!

Swapped in some D8ea's and the thing runs like a champ.

Took if for a quick ride and it does what I'd expect an old bike to do (performance wise).

I did notice that the idle is a little high (2100 rpms once warm) and there is a small oil leak between the crank case and the cylinder block. I'm going to start another thread on that issue. (Pic below trying to show where I suspect a piece of gasket should be)
