In the process of sorting out weird handling issues on my CB500K, I discovered that the rear wheel was out of true. I took it off and put it on the truing stand last night, only to find that I think it's actually got a significant dent, a flat spot about two spokes wide. So I wasn't able to true it up any better after all. Also, many of the spoke nipples were seized and about to break when I tried tightening or loosening them. I went through this with my Transalp and wound up breaking a spoke, and eventually just relaced the whole thing.
Anyway, I am shopping around for a replacement rim and spoke kit, and wonder if folks have used any of the usual vendors for this recently. I know Buchannan's will be the nicest quality, but with the highest price. For now the front rim will remain stock, so I want something original looking to match.
4 into 1 and David Silver Spares (two of my current favorite online stores...) each carry a replacement DID rim, supposedly good quality. Can anyone speak to this? 4into1 also carries a slightly cheaper one made by "Union Cycle." And finally, they both carry spoke kits, and on a superficial basis I like the ones from 4into1 better because DSS kits seem to have zinc colored spoke nipples, I feel like that might look a little odd...
So basically I'm trying to validate my thinking that a "stock replacement" kit from one of these vendors will be a safe choice. Are the DID replacement rims okay? Are the cheap spoke kits they carry okay, or will they corrode and look like garbage in a couple of years?
