My V70 wagon was a btich to work on.  Fun car to drive, but never again.
Loved my 98Subaru Outback Ltd (240k mi), and would definitely get another.

Amen!  Never before I worked on a vehicle where you have to take off intake to replace PCV system  :o

Fortunately my Saab is easy to work on, the easiest of any modern car I have experienced. I have even had the oil pan off when I thought it had a sludge issue and I did it with the engine in place in an afternoon with nothing but a hydraulic jack, jack stands and ordinary metric hand tools.

My 2004 Jetta with the 1.8 turbo and 5-speed tiptronic automatic on the other hand was a major pain in the ass. So much so that I actually paid dealer rates to have the timing belt replaced.

Much ridiculed, but best car I ever owned was the '71 Pinto my grandmother handed down to me. Great on gas, could see/reach everything under the hood, and didn't need an engineering degree to work on it. Had close to 200k on it when I had to get rid of it in '92. Miss that damn car every day.

Customer of mine just bought a pinto wagon as a self-gifted-retirement-project.  Says he wants to swap in a 5.0 motor.  I hope the thing does wheelies when finished

 ;D Second the motion!!

Seriously, My brother, who is a mechanic, is very fond of the early 2000's Chevy impalas and Monte Carlo's with the 3800 motors in them. They are also front wheel drive, if that makes a difference to you.  And they go for a lot less than 25k!!

My daughter has a subaru Forrester, she loved it until they said it had the bad head gaskets and gave her a $7,000 estimate to fix it. Book on it was $9K. She traded for a Toyota 4 runner and took a big hit.

Don, I think that mechanic wanted to be your son-in-law cause he was trying to..... That's a 2+ grand job. More to that than just gaskets I'd say.

I think Big Jay needs to make them heavy duty studs!!

I'd love one but I'm also looking at a 4runner with a tdi swap.  I'd love one of the pre 86 ones with the removable top and solid front axle.  I'm up before the snow plows are on the road and have had to chain up in 4x4 to get to work several times, so a suv is rather important

Toyota RAV4. Not big. Not small. Comfortable. Very capable in snow. VERY reliable.

I own 3 of them. ( and an FJ Cruiser) All are between 135,000- 170,000 miles and are going strong and are still reliable.

Always get a second opinion and try to stay away from the dealership.
Daughter's RAV4 trans was acting up. Brought to dealer to see what they say. They would only say "Needs a new trans. $6,000." They even admitted the new trans would have $1,000 of needless upgrades from her trans, but "that's how they all come nowadays."

Went to Aamco and before they even looked at it they said I probably didn't need a trans. I asked how could they be so sure? The manager said he had done trans work on 25 RAV4s, and 23 of them didn't need a new trans.  Turned out to be some electronic module attached to the trans. Total price of repair- $1200.

I worked at a dealership for a short time and saw this over and over- One trick the dealerships use is to quote you an outrageous price on a repair and if you say "yes" and have it done, they win big. If you balk, they will offer to walk you over to the showroom, where they have it all set up with a salesman to show you a brand new model of what you're driving. And they will give you a "great deal" on your trade that sounds too good to be true to you, because they know they quoted you $5,000 more than it will cost them to repair your car.

Family and friends have had bad experiences with Subaru head gaskets and excessive oil consumption at sub-100K miles. A friend recently got the engine replaced under warranty, but my brother was told "too bad". I personally would not own a Subaru.

Yep. My bro-in-law is a Sub mechanic, that's what's putting his kids through college! They aren't the car people think they are but everybody here sure loves them. I've had my fair share of them but I won't buy a newer one.

I had a Honda Civic Hybrid, my opinion? Stay AWAY!!! Nothing but problems. Our friends have a 2 year old Ford Fusion Hybrid they are already thinking of getting rid of it for all it's problems so far.

My car is a Chev Tahoe, lot's of miles and still going strong. The only thing I don't like about it is the really really crappy gas mileage. But it will tow a house off the foundation if you want it too. :)
