I can't get a grip!
« on: August 12, 2016, 04:32:55 AM »
My hand grips will not stay on my bike so I need to know what  super duper glue that will hold those grips on, it's no fun when your grips start to come off while riding. :)! And it's pretty dang hot here in Georgia

All of my bikes are like that.

The left one comes loose all the time, even after the local Harley shop reinstalled mine after my crash.

And definitely agree about the heat here in Georgia.

The bars on my CB350F still have the factory setup, and those are firmly in place.
If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

LOL! Pretty dang hot here too! I've tried several different methods, and finally settled on two part epoxy. I first used a two part epoxy as I was preparing to head out for an extended road trip. The hairspray from the day before proved quite useless, as the grip came right back off before I even got the bike out of the garage. The schedule did not leave me with the luxury of time to wait another 24 hrs for adhesive to dry. Looking around the garage I spotted the two vials of 15 minute two part epoxy. I whipped up a small puddle, slathered it in the grip and on the bar, assembled the two, wiped off any excess, and 20 minutes later I was on the road. The grip has stayed put for a few years now and several thousand miles. I have had to remove a grip after using this method, so the grips can still be removed and reused. I just wouldn't do it more than I had to, since it does require some effort to twist them off.  8)

Are you sure you don't mean your Aquanet there cal?  ;D

Contact Cement ($2) The kind you'd use on vinyl upholstery repair.
I just used this stuff to do my 550 seat cover, and d@mn...thats sticky stuff.
Locktite spray adhesive($6)  I used this with my Oury grips.
Spray in the grip and on the bar.  Slides right on.  Dry in an hour.  Solid.

Gorilla glue works great too. It's a moisture cured urethane adhesive that expands a bit as it cures so pop a cold one and wipe off the excess while enjoying your favourite beer. Win, win!

I use electronics cleaner, clean the grip and bar good so there's no oils then give the bar a good spray so the grip slides on. The cleaner evaporates in minutes. The grip is usually stuck pretty well but not a pain to get back off.

Scott Grip Glue is basically permatex black.  Usually works as long as the bars and grips are clean going together.

I haven't had much issue with my emgo foamy grips wanting to migrate.

But my atv grips.  They're starting to move around, and I'm glad about it cause they're ready for replacement.  Considering Odi lock ons.

This. It's something specifically made for installing grips and it's not expensive. And it's not hair spray, shaving gel, Mennen speed stick, extract of quinoa, goat's tears, or whatever.

The spray adhesive might work well, I usually keep some of that on the shelf. It would depend upon the type of grip used. The grips I like best are an aluminum tube with a rubber insert. The rubber insert has tall pads that extend up through the aluminum tube that do an incredible job of quelling vibrations. The inside of the rubber tube that fits over the bar has many deep pockets inside and therefore does not make contact with the bars over 100% of the inner surface. This makes some of the less aggressive adhesives less effective in my experience on this particular type of grip. If the grips being used have a 100% contact patch on the bar, and the grip fit the bar snuggly from the beginning, then a less aggressive adhesive should do well. I do tend to exert a bit of force on the grips from time to time when I feel the need to pull myself "up on the pegs" when I see a particularly rough patch of pavement ahead.

I did that one time and discovered my handlebar clamps weren't quite as tight as they should have been!  :o  It took two weeks for the clench marks to relax out of the saddle...  ;)

Get some thin gauge wire and twist a few bands on and plant the sharp point into the grip. Motocross guys do it. I did mine like that and they stay put.

I use absolutely nothing, for real, you gotta make sure your bars are clean and grips are brand new.  Use compressed air to slightly inflate grips while pushing them on.  The only grips I have ever had slip or get loose had a mess of whatever kind of goopy glue.

I have never had to use anything.  I've replaced the grips on 6 bikes and never needed grip glue.

Clean those bars with rubbing alcohol - get all the oil off them.  Clean them smooth and shiny.  I use canned air to puff them up as I work them on.

Clean the inside of the grips as well. A clean handlebar is no good if the inside of the grip is in any way greasy or dirty.

you were right about overthinking it, I cleaned the barI really well, wrapped a few layers of electrical tape on it and finished it with a few strands of wire, even though I may not have needed it. End of problem and this post::!

In cases where it keeps slipping, I spray some paint into the grip, Rustoleum or whatever black you have, and slip it on.
