Clutch acting crazy
« on: August 10, 2016, 10:22:32 AM »
I'm a bit lost on the recent behavior of my clutch!

To give a little context, a year ago I changed the clutch plates and springs in my K4, and it solved all my clutch slipping problems just fine. I also changed my oil to 20w50 synthetic.

And last week, the problems started:
- i pick up the bike and the clutch is too loose (had not problems while riding previously), meaning i cannot change gears easily.
- i change the clutch cable by a brand new Honda one, and readjust everything, ride 150 miles and its all good
- next day i pick up the bike again and the clutch is too tight, meaning i can change gears but not disengage fully, so the gears slip
- i ajust the cable again from the lever, and ride 150 miles back without a problem
- yesterday i pick up the bike from the garage, and the clutch is way too tight again, but this time i have no leeway for adjusting the cable as the lever adjustment is bottomed out.

I cannot understand how my clutch adjustment would change overnight when the bike is sitting! when i set it and ride for hours its all fine, but on three occasions it dramatically moved overnight (too loose one, and too tight twice) for no apparent reason.

Have you guys encountered this before? am i missing something?

Best,
Antoine

Sounds like your cable is in a bind. Check your cable routing and eliminate any sharp bends in the cable. You might want to lube the cable while you're at it.

Hmmm....clutch acting strange and a switch to Synthetic oil?  ::)
Maybe your bike is finally rebelling.
Is the Synth oil wet clutch rated?

The problem appeared both with the old clutch cable and the new one, so i ruled that out. But yesterday evening i took it all apart again and lubed everything, plus did the full adjustments again. I'll take it out tonight to see if it worked!

As for the synthetic oil, I used the recommendations i found on this forum and bought "Castrol 06116 Power1 V-Twin 20W-50 Synthetic 4T Motorcycle Oil ", it is supposedly rated for clutches.

Might it be the lock nut inside the clutch cover that somehow moves?

I thought "V-Twin" oil was a no-no?

Harley v twins can run full synthetic because they have a separate tranny/primary drive, not good for our old scoots.

Red Line Motorcycle oil 20W-50 (syntethic) is OK in my CB750.   No problem finding neutral when warm and no slip when giving full thottle. +80 rwhp

It is recommended for V-twins too. Is it the 20W-50 and high quality oil that V-twin must have? Long stroke means higher piston speed even if rpm is not that high.

Is the clutch arm mechanism properly adjusted? I got problem once when the nut came loose.
