Oil line fitting leak
« on: June 11, 2007, 04:53:16 PM »
After I replaced the tank I noticed a huge leak from the line towards the midline of the bike, where it attaches to the tank.
What kind of seal is that?  I have cranked it purdy darned tight and its still pouring out. :(

Whats with the reservoir anyway?  Why not just a wet sump?

Where the lines attach to the tank, it's just a compression fitting. On the ends that attach to the engine, the fittings are sealed with O-rings. Make sure there isn't something stuck on the mating surface that could be wedging the sealing surface apart.

The dry sump systems has many advantages. You don't need a bulky oil pan on the bottom of the engine, so the engine can be placed lower in the frame, lowering the center of gravity. Also, you don't have to worry about the crankshaft whipping around in the oil, causing drag on the crank (sapping HP) and foaming up the oil. Kinda hard to fit a windage tray in there...

Well the fitting is plenty tight and I think it is leaking from the swivelling joint just downstream from this connection.
Any ideas on that??

ie, time to replace/there is a way to fix that/ best to take it off and inspect it/get the caulking out??

I think I shall have to replace them both... they look pretty old.
Maybe one of those online parts places carries them.

Assuming all tank fittings are about the same , did you  put in drain washers 12 mm, 14 mm. in the fittings going to the oil tank. The last time I checked with honda the hoses were real expensive. I made my own.

Where the lines attach to the tank, it's just a compression fitting.

Compression fittings have a crush ring or barrel or are conical to complete the seal, these are just two flat surfaces pressed together. Is there supposed to be some kind of gasket in there? Mine leak too.

I have a washer in each one 12mm, and the other 14mm . I have no leaks, on my  750 ss 1978.
Check this out hope this helps.http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit.com/partsbandit/oem_schematic_view~schem_dept_id~2330854~section_dept_id~1~section_dept_name~OEM+%28Stock%29+Parts~dept_type_id~2~model_dept_year~1978~model_dept_mfr~Honda~model_dept_id~2330814~model_dept_name~CB750F.asp
look at items 24 and 25 these go inside the oil lines leading to the motor.

Thanks! I ordered some washers this am.
I don't recall any being on mine when I took it apart however...

Now, the hose guy refused to assemble mine but he did consent to sell me some.  (what gives there?)
So I have to figure out how to clamp the hose to the fittings.

Any products you'd recommend?  I really would prefer to avoid screw type hose clamps!!

I was surprised to find one washer on the oil lines on my 1976 CB750F1 (forgot which one), the parts book does not show any, maybe they were fitted on the production line as required, I have owned the bike since new and this was the first time it has ever been stripped so it must have been put there at Honda.

Cheers

If you have both washers 14mm and 12mm. you can get a better seal if you anneal them (heat them w/ a torch until the are soft again) this will save you a trip to the parts store.  They are alum and won't need much heat for too long (or they really get soft and melt!) works on copper crush washers too!

First time I did mine I left these out and had some serious leaks (they are not shown on the parts fiche) I wondered where these mysterious extra parts went...

Good luck!

I guess I will use ordinary ugly worm gear clamps so I can get this thing going again.

Do the washers go on all four ends, or just the two that attach to the oil tank?
