To anyone that wants a broken triple clamp (Terry?), they can have mine for the price of shipping, free if you pickup it up in Santa Clara.......just have to take it off the bike one of these days

SOLD! Thanks mate, as much as I'd love to pick it up, I could probably buy a NOS one for the price of travel from Oz to Santa Clara, but more than happy to pay postage, plus I'll kick in enough for a fine (well, cheap, like me.......) bottle of American whisky. Thanks mate! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

So is there a torque value on the bolts so as to not overtighten and crack?

I've never used my torque wrench on it, just tighten by feel.

The triple tops that I've seen broken are typically missing the D-washer, which acts as a spacer.

I've got a couple extra washers and I take one as an example w/ me to the hardware store to match up for the correct thickness and that way I make-up a few spares to keep from cracking that good hard(and brittle cast aluminum)oem original top triple. The other thing to be very careful with is removing the top triple, use plenty of WD40 and whatever you do don't use a steel hammer or drift punch.
Since this thread, I have discovered that the PO of my 1971 K1 750 left out the D washers on the upper bolts. Now I want to assemble it correctly. What is the thickness of the D washer and/or where can i procure them?

Never mind guys. Hondaman says these washers/spacers on the upper crown bolts are 2mm thick. Also, they are available as genuine Honda parts from David Silver. They are part # 53235-300-000

That would be so simple to make. Take a standard washer 2mm thick and grind down one side to attain the D shape.

I've already made a few previously,I was careful to round the edges so they would have even seating when torqued.

My K1 triple never had the washers, and never broke, but I was warned early on
not to over-tighten the bolts. ;)

When I restored my K0, both sides of the top tree were broken. I got a new one on ebay and after fiddling a bit I decided the washer was too thin so I made my own. If you think about it, it's the lower tree that keeps the forks from moving up and down. The top tree just keeps the fork from rocking front-to-back. So I made washers that kept the top tree snug. No more than that. It's still intact after several years.

The washers under the head nuts on a 750 engine are supposed to be very close to the proper thickness. One side needs to be ground flat and they are slightly larger around.

Ten bucks for a washer? Does it come with dancing girls and a free car wash?

Yeah, I know. I guess it gives me warm fuzzies to open a package for a genooine Honda part.

Here goes with my CAD drawing to make your own 'D' washer / spacer. Note the 'Checked By' name  in the drawing  :D :D

For anyone looking to make their own washers, I measured four sets last night and they were all 2.28 mm.

Just to be clear about this, the 4 sets you measured WERE all original Honda parts?.
Don't mean to be a pedant here, it's just Hondaman says 2mm, AshimotoKO says 2.32 and you say 2.28mm. I know those digital verniers are not 100% accurate...maybe that is the difference. Either way, I guess any of the above is better than none.

I measured mine .. it was not NOS but still had the black finish and looked pristine and I measured it with a good 'ol British Moore & Wright micrometer. I think they are deffo more than 2.0 mm  but maybe Hondaman knows that if you make 'em a straight 2 mm you get a bit more 'nip' but still safe to not crack or overstess. Not gonna argue with the 'main man' anyway ;)

Yes, all were original Honda parts. I did zero the calipers before measuring :)
