cl350 camshaft question
« on: August 14, 2016, 11:09:04 PM »
Many years ago, I heard of a bad ass 350 scrambler that had supposedly the ability to run 12s at the local track. Besides straight exhaust and carbs somehow grafted on from a cb450, the story went that it had a "Thompson" (?) camshaft. I heard a rumor
that bike still exists, and original owner's son still rides it. I'm curious as to weather this story is true, but what bothers me the most is, Is/was there a manufacturer by the name of Thompson that made cams, or named a certain grind by that name?
One of those too good to be true stories, and I can't seem to find any information. Anyone ever heard of hyping 350 twins
back in the day? Curious...

I haven't heard of it, but I cross posted your question on the Honda Twins site:

I put a bore kit in my 350 around 1974ish.. 360 cc i think withmaybe higher domes, came from Rocky Cycle. Had Kibblewhite springs and guides, they were called Precision Machining or something like that had a very hot cam from Kenny Harmon I think , it would rev easily to 13 or 14,000rpm.
Rounded it all out with 2 750 KO carbs,and a 2-1 pipe...it screamed..
Not 12 secs though with me on it.

That remindes me that this bike was bored out too, by a good amount. Your general protocal with your bike is very similar to what
I'd heard about this one. IIRC, this motor was bored wayyy out, maybe to its safe limits, and had some kind of performance clutch. Starting to sound feasable now. The intakes were modified to fit 450 carbs. I kinda of knew the guy who owned it, but never saw him with it. High 12s seems like what I remember being told. I did see him ride once tho, on my own personal "stock" cl350. He made it do things I never dreamed possible. The guy defineately knew how to ride.
