81 650 camshaft
« on: August 11, 2016, 06:30:03 PM »
Hi fellas! So I'm trying to put camshaft back on and the issues I'm having is I don't see how to get the camshaft into the position on the mark, get the chain on sprocket and line up the sprocket bolt holes with the camshaft bolt holes. Doing all three of those seems impossible. It's like my chain is too tight or something. I've been working on it for a few hours. As I said, once the chain is on sprocket, there's no way to get it close enough to camshaft bolt holes to put bolt on. Once the chain is on the sprocket won't move up any. Any help?

Cam in. Sprocket on. Lift chain onto installed sprocket. If you attempt to mount the chain onto the sprocket, then mount to cam, its "tweaked" just enough to make it too tight to align.

The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Not sure how the 650 tensioner is adjusted but it needs to be backed right off first, then put the chain around the sprocket and slip the sprocket into place on the camshaft last. Then pull up on the front side of the sprocket and check if the timing mark lines up - if it doesn't, slip the sprocket back off the camshaft to reposition the chain...

Pgs 31 and 89 of the 650 manual should help.  Look in the manuals section for that.  I haven't worked on my 650 yet, but looking at the manual I'm thinking it works the same way as the 550.  You should be able to loosen the locknut for the tensioner (while holding the tensioner stud with a screwdriver) and turn the tensioner opposite the direction it wants to return.  Don't go crazy, just give it some gentle pressure, and lock it down.

Now go back to your cam chain and you should have just enough slack to get it all together.
