Anyone know of any allen bolt carb kits out there for our bikes. I hate soft phillips bits that are on the caps and bowls. We just purchased an allen set for my brothers Thruxton and I figure it would be great for our bikes too.

I assume you are talking just the float bowl screws. I can't think of other screws in the carbs that aren't special or need a special head design to clear something that moves. At one point I was working on a set of 550 carbs so often that I went to an industrial fastner supply house and made up my own set out of stainless steel. I am on good enough terms with them that if this is something people want I can have a few sets made - Just have to bring them the screws to match up. I don't know if one of those full allen kits would cover that (not just the engine kit but there are kits out there that claim to replace just about ever screw in the bike), but the engine allen kits I buy don't.

Yeah, basically the float bolts screws and top caps screws. Didn't think of bringing them to a fastener place and just matching up. I'll look into that locally.

I got mine @ home depot. got slightly bent, but they had them. Fastenal has them too.

Just looking at my parts 550 parts manual. It looks like the float bowl screws are 4mm x 10mm and the top caps are 5mm x 16mm. What is the thread pitch. Would like to order first without pulling the carbs apart. 069A 550F carbs btw.

I just replaced a few of the stripped out phillips screws on my carbs (550k) last week. If I remember correct they were 3 x 0.8 x 12mm for the bowl and 3 x 0.8 x 20mm for the top plate.

Great find. They don't have the 550 listed on the site but I emailed them. They do have a universal kit for mikuni and keihin carbs. I'll post back when I here from them.

ACE Hardware has stainless hexbolts and washers in metric. That's where I picked up a set for my carbs.

I know this is not a popular view, so flame away... :-). But using Allen (technically, socket head) screws is carburetors is a bad idea on several levels. Just for starters, they are too easily over-tightened. If you must use them, tighten them with an Allen screwsdriver, not an l-shaped Allen wrench. Virtually all the pulled threads I see on carbs are due the use of Allens, and this is a trend I have seen for over 40 years. If you are tearing up the stock Phillips scews, you probably need to get a new screwdriver.

and remember, the stock screws in the bike are not actually Phillips (unless they have been changed), they are Japanese Industrial Standard. So when you buy a new screwdriver to work on your bike make sure you buy a JIS set as well:

I just went to Ace for some float bowl screws - they had them in SS, both phillips and allen. I went w/phillips for the simple reason 0.20/each vs. 0.85 for the allen. I believe they are M4 x 10mm. Cheap, easy, no shipping...
