Tank identification 75 cb550f
« on: August 16, 2016, 12:54:53 PM »
Hello! This is my cb550f. I'm in the process of cleaning up some of the issues the previous owner didn't know how to. Got it running great and now I'm focusing on cosmetics. The tank needs to be cleaned up or replaced....not too much rust in the bottom half but the top is pretty bad where fuel never touches. Im not sure this is the original 75 550f tank....can anyone confirm by the picture?

that's a cb500 tank, and judging by color that's either a 71 or a 72 tank.

That's not an F model seat, either. But that's OK, because that's the seat you need to match that tank. If you got the correct F model tank, that seat wouldn't line up properly.
Looks like the gauges may have been changed, too? Were all F model gauges green faced?

That explains a lot because the carburetors that came on it we're from a 71 cb500 I replaced them with a proprietary 75 cb500f carburetors so it looks like this bike was put together with pieces from cb500

Looks like a hodgepodge of many things but the tank could be 74 550K. The tank decal is 1974 and the color matches too. The clutch position on the motor is definitely 550. Side cover mounts on the frame look like 550F. What does the label say on the head tube?

Also not a F model kick start lever. Does the tag on the frame neck say it's an F, because it sure seems to me like it's not.

Are you sure it had 500 carbs on it. I thought the 500k models and early 550k models used the same carbs, 022a.

Also, it is a very common error for sellers of CB550's to call their bikes CB550F's because in their mind F=Four. They are not knowledgeable enough to know that on CB550's F is a model designation for Super Sport.

That looks like an F model kicker and brake lever to me.

I agree that tank is probably from a '74 550K. The kickstarter is definitely an F model one and so is the frame. The seat is a 500 seat going by the cover pattern. The '75 F model had the green face instruments.
Looks remarkably similar to my '75 F before I acquired the correct seat and tank!

The tank on mine was temporarily borrowed from my 500, the seat is now a left over spare part but.
I have another 500 tank(repainted dark red and honda badges deleted), but you wouldn't like the price that Australia Post would charge to ship it to U.S.!

I think it was the angle of the photo that got me. When I got home and looked at mine clearly that is an F kicker.

Were all F model gauges green faced?

My '77 F has blue faces. I thought all 77s were blue.

'76 models were green...and seem to fade less than other years.

There was a lot of green back in '76!  ;D
