Cb550k0 rebuild
« on: August 23, 2016, 12:57:12 PM »
Par request, all questions I have will land here.

Right so frame and that stuff comes later. I've got the top end tore down and am trying to figure out how to remove the cylinders.

Right so I just gotta get the cylinders out then it's on to bottom end work. If anyone has any tips on how to remove them besides what the book says which is "tap it off" please let me know.

So today I took various pieces and soaked them in purple power to degrease them. Then took wire brushes to remove the rest of the gunk. Then haha took a makita drill with a steel wire cup to clean up. So yeah that's where we're at today. Stay tuned.

If you havent gotten the cylinder jugs separated yet, there are a couple of ways to go about it.
Since you already have the valve head removed, you're that much closer.  I assume the crank turns of you were able to loosen the timing chain yes?  Perfecto.
Here's what I did.
Place a piece of wood against the fins, hit that wood with a hammer a couple of times.  Move around the jugs so you apply force in multiple directions.
Turn the crank until all the cylinders line up mid stroke.
Find the notch between the lower case and jugs.  That is a factory designated pry spot.  BE GENTLE!!!  Place a fine taper chisel or screwdriver, tap that in, just gently.
With any luck, you oughta hear a *thwuck* once the gasket sealer lets go.
After its free, just coax the jugs up the stud and guide the cylinders and rings out the bore.
It's not a perfect science, but it's how things come apart.

Brilliant Bomberman, thank you, will report back. Went to the hardware store as well to pick up a 6mm bolt earlier on. Started removing the rocker arms and of course the last one won't come out.. Gunna wait for tomorrow to properly tap it out. Oh and that, what I think is the tac cable, is stil stuck on the rocker cover. Waiting until I snag a set of JIS screw drivers before I attempt to remove THAT screw.

Bomber, the od says 96k but I'm not for certain.

Also calj yes this is fact haha I switched over to brass and nylon after noticing the trenches a steel brush was creating! So fellow newbies, don't use steel!

96,000?!?!?!!??!?

It's thats the truth, best be searching for a nice low mileage rocker box assembly, or the highly coveted pinned rockerbox.

I got lucky on a complete 77k engine that had the pinned rockers.

Looks like original tires.  Somehow I doubt 96k miles.

Someone somewhere seems to have tried a rear disc conversion.

If that is any indication

Bomb, what is this? Please educate me m, you have my curiosity..

See the extra for studs in the breather cover area? They started doing this in 1976 to keep the cam keepers from wearing fast.

If you think there are 96K miles on this bike I would start looking for a lower mileage motor before throwing money at this one. But that's just me.

Ah gotcha right on duanob, also thanks bomb. So I assume then that a 76 rocker cover would fit on this k0 motor??

But yeah bomb the rear disc threw me off cause I was under the assumption that it was drum braking in the rear.

Also calj I don't think so, can't remember. Uploading photo of the OD soon.

Most all of the cb550 engine parts are interchangeable.  Honda manufacturing musta been pretty lean back in the 70's

1.  How many miles are on the bike?

2.  Yes you said "96k" but that means:  96,000.  On what appears to be the original tires that seems really unlikely.  In MILES.

3.  Can you please clear up this issue as people are advising you based on the mileage you gave which would appear to be incorrect.

See! Exactly the reason this thing is getting rebuilt! Haha. Can't risk it, to risky, no business. Say bomb, you wouldn't happen to have one of those rocker boxes from 76 on for sale would yah??
