I have been using paper towels. Would a tampon work better?  I am adding oil each day so the level is fine and my oil light has yet to come on.

1/4" Cotton rope gasket. Shove it in there, ride, replace as necessary. At least this is what I'm told. I tried it for a while with a similar leak - got tired of replacing the rope - just put up with the leg spatter :)

Is there any 500/550 experts in her intended path  that can maybe fix it.

According to her blog, her next destination is Galax, Virginia.

Hi all. Well it is not the tappett covers it really is the darned wind. I stuffed more towels in lower fins and that helped tremendously. I   Am in Galax VA now and riding the blue ridge parkway tomorrow. I am going to just put up with a very shiny left leg on my leather  and a big encrusted one on my right.  Otherwise Dash is doing great. Shifting well and pulling well. Just the silly oil which I hoped would magically repair itself prior to the ride.

You are 120 miles from me...road trip up to meet you but need to work on my cx some more and you are likely tired give I wouldn't be there before probably 8pm.  Are you heading South or North on the BRP?

Peppers Deli in Boone, 20 min ride from Blowing Rock if you want a good deli sandwich when going throught that area.  Mast General Store in Valle Crucis (down 105 South of Boon about 4-5 miles before turn to go there.
Really cool historic store that has been in business in their current build since 1883.  They stock lots of cool things and useful items for the community as well as the tourists.
The route along the river is pretty too.  Worth the side trip.

You do want to return to Blowing Rock as the section of BRP from there south to the backside of Grandfather Mountain is very picturesque and goes on a Viaduct built in the mid 80s.

Seems like there aught to be someone along the way could help her out. But I'd think getting the parts in a timely manner would be part of the chore.

I agree. I think that it is just easier to keep the fins stuffed on that left side and trudge on. If I decide it is to much I am certain someone along my route will let me store Dash and then I can shop him back. But so far we are determined to go forward. No stinking oil  leak is going to stop us!  We are SOHC -4 strong

Yep, tomorrow will be the last day. Covered 554 miles today (532 yesterday), it's 415 to Chicago from here, but I am going to divert a bit to visit my grandparent's grave, which is more or less on the way, plus I live just north of Chicago, so I will likely be close to 500 again tomorrow.

4,214 total miles through today.

The floats on multiple carbs are sticking now, but I finally managed to find a partial off position on the petcock that allows enough fuel through to fill the bowls at cruising speeds, but not enough so that they overfill and the bike starts to stumble. However, I didn't figure that out until after a few hours of on/off cycling.

The carbs are due for a lot of attention over the next couple weeks.

Annoying but runnable.
Just jam papervtowel in there with a screwdriver or popsicle stick..
Just think..... What Would FRANK do ?

It just dawned on me , I made it there and back.l Success  !
And now I got a running bike...  feels pretty good..

So that would be WWFD and keep on charging? 8)

Yes, forging ahead is easily done with minor attention to the leak as long as it stays as a minor leak.  You could have a leak under the end caps on the cover, easy oring replacement there.

But, having Mike do his magic on the head and block would be ideal if you wish to reward Dash for all the great miles he has given you since you built him and began that phase of your ownership. You would not have to go crazy on the headwork, but Mike can build him back up to be a great highway and twisty riad bike without killing the fuel economy.  You can rest easy he knows very well what to do on the 550 head and motor to return to you a powerful and renewed Dash.  Plus he has all the contacts and sources to get the parts and work at his prices.  Sporting a small JMR sticker will add hp & torque by itself I hear. Just ask Brent Waller.  :)

Your Duc will like the attention I am sure in Dash's absence.  Just go with a good private owner/operator outfit with good reviews if you do choose to have Dash shipped to Cali.  Do recognize that availability of carriers will drop to near nothing in the dead of winter if snow is flying across the country.

Good luck with your decision.

If you can get the pucks sent to someone near where you will be traveling, then installing them will be less than 1/2 day's work.  You will need to source some replacement orings while you have the cover off.  You can use foot powder, spray-on kind, to find your oil leak location(s) after a good cleaning of the cylinders, head and cover.  It looks to me like you have more than just a puck leak give the oil locations.  It is interesting how a small amount of oil can make a big mess.

Mooshie - I was just thinking, you had said a while back you were going to replace your tach and/or tach cable. Is it possible your tach seal is part of the leak? I'm just looking at the collection of oil on TOP of the head. It won't kill it, but it does make a helluva mess.
