My new (to me) camera (Fuji Finepix S 9480 digital) and GoPro Hero Session were delivered to my buddy's hardware store today. I will pick them up tomorrow and have a few days to familiarize myself with them before I hit the road on Saturday.

The next 3 night in the shop are going to be busy (they are closed Thurs/Fri, so come what may the bike is out of there at the end of the evening Wednesday):
(1) paint front caliper, install new pads, install caliper and bleed
(2) install new chain
(3) finish crimping retaining ring on tach and reinstall on bike
(4) check valves and adjust timing chain tensioner
(4) complete installation of new LED headlight
(5) Replace running light/turn signal bulbs with LED's (including 4 resistors), hook up rear turn signals on bags
(6) install fairing or windshield (whichever is easier)
(7) change oil and filter
(8 ) completely test charging system

Outside the work on the bike, I also need to figure out what actual route I am going to take and where I am going to stay. No pressure.

Gonna be a shock for me, have not seen rain for 40 days and 40 nights....
I hate the thought. Hope its a least 50 at night thru the trip.

(1) A functioning front brake is mandatory, but it doesn't need to be pretty. Don't waste valuable shop time waiting for paint to dry.
(2) 
(3) A tach isn't really a necessity; move towards the bottom of the list.
(4)/(5) The first part of #4 is good, but if your headlight is working and the turn signals are working, the upgrade to LED isn't really a necessity; bottom of the list.
(7) Higher priority than (6).

 I'm leaving early wed morning/tomorrow night. I just did a last minute carb swap to a set of known good 83 carbs. I'll be on the 78gl1000, no 750's ready for the trip except the sandcast and I'm trying to stay under 10,000 miles. I'm headed to Mt, Rushmore /S Dakota first, I got a tip on highway 20 through iowa, I haven't looked it up yet but it involves a good Honda shop stop along the way. Next via Casper Wy, then down the west side of the bumps to Delores.

 I have a cool cantiliever fog light mount, that hangs off the front windjammer bolts. my brother gave me two cool old fog/driving lights. After an afternoon of install and rebuilding they worked for 1.5 minutes. Apparently 6V. Curses.

My wife's been giving me grief about haphazard planning, you guys are making me feel downright organizized. Finally got my Frankenbeast pretty much together and took her for a little spin today. Still need to install the fairing, work out some fine tuning and odds and ends, register it, finalize my route,  get my gear together, etc., but it's lookin' good!

Jerry, I am planning a stopover in Denver on Monday. One of my brothers-in-law lives there with his wife along with 2 nieces and 2 grand-nieces.

The chain is installed and tensioned and the calipers painted and rear brake hooked back up. I'll install the caliper along with the new pads and probably a new piston seal tomorrow. The delay really didn't hurt since prepping for paint didn't take much time and the actually painting I did in between other work.

The headlight is test fitted to the shell already. I just need to remove the H4 female plug and replace it with the adapter I got with the light. The other bulbs should be easy too. Already did the tail light and gauge lights. 

By the end of the day tomorrow I will have fully functional brakes, full gauges, lights and adjusted valves and cam chain. I have electronic ignition, so no messing with points. I might check the carb synch, but that really depends on time.

Do not forget to pack your tire gauge , some patches (or plugs if using radials), your chain lube, some rags or paper towels dealing with any mess, few plastic bags.  Some hand cleaner and nitrile or vinyl gloves.

Hot weather and humidity/sweating a lot you can develop a fungal infection easily when riding for long distances.  The Lamasil product for jock itch, terbinafine active ingredient, is very effective to addressing that by killing the fungus.  It is not just a problem that men have to deal with.  Talc or corn starch can help a little but motorcycling shorts or an undergarment that wicks the moisture away helps.  Talc or corn starch can help with any friction.
The lamasil works well but it is not overnight, but it will typically kill any problem within a week using it daily.

Good job on getting the bikes ready everyone and safe travels.

Reminder that a well rested brain from a good night's sleep is one of the best things you can do before the trip.

Stay hydrated  as getting dehydrated will cause you to have trouble focusing and affect your concentration.

If you want to convoy ride south Tuesday morning. I'm right off I-25 exit 151. I MAY need to stick around for a bit before leaving.  I swapped carbs and the miss was still there, maybe worse. I walked past my brothers tool box and saw a set of new plug caps and sure enough even after testing the old ones and finding all 4 @ 5K ohms, replacing them did the trick. I'll be rolling about 3 am under a full moon on Iowa 20 west.
