Got "hit" what would you do?
« on: August 24, 2016, 11:08:10 AM »
So today I was at the usps and a guy says you evers bike is outside some one just hit it! I say wtf and exit the building with my heart pounding so hard already seeing the bike on the ground in tons of little parts..... To my surprise the bike is still standing but the driver is trying to leave! I stop him and make him come back. I look at the bike and find he broke a bunch of fins off the jugs and head. I have his info. I'm pissed because I know he would have left... But I also can't decide if I should call my INS and let them deal with it. What would you guys do? Let him off the hook or hell no??

Total up the damage.  Double it (since he was going to leave)
Have him pay cash, or you'll call the insurance.

Yeah... But how the hell do you figure out how much that would cost? To "fix" what he did you would have to pull engine replace head and jugs that would be a lot of cash..

I believe that the damage I am looking at could be fixed by a welder. They add material to the fins then grind it down to match the profile.

leverage that an employee saw him about to leave.  you get his ins info and DL?
Yeah...a competent welder could , but the d-bag doesnt need to know that  ;D
Find a top dollar set of jugs and a head on ebay, and at a min, ave him pay that.

wow that sucks. Sorry to hear

I always wonder what would happen if my bike fell over...like would the fins hit the ground or would the bars and the points / stator covers take the impact

I guess this answers my question

That is why he has insurance. Use it. Get a price to replace the damaged parts and use that. It'll be totaled. Take the settlement and buy the bike from the insurance company at a low ball price.

shifty5150 It would..... But it was also hit last year and already has a savage title. The bike is worth a lot... I would feel bad if his INS had to pay the full amount.. Would you all do that?

Don't worry about that, the INS company will be trying to get away with paying the minimum amount they can. Especially where vintage vehicles are concerned. Just make sure they pay at least what it costs to fix.

Hell, depending on the ins co, they might try to avoid you altogether.

I would first call the Police and report it, and the Driver for attempting to leave. With Police report in hand, call your Insurance company, and HIS/HERs. Make them pay you what its worth. What you spend to repair it is your business. Do NOT discount time, labor, inconvenience as expenses built into the repair.

After you have the Insurance company check in hand, cashed, and cleared, find the Driver and drag their no-good, POS arse down the street behind your bike. For a GOOD LONG WHILE. Worthless POS.... (Him, not you)

Did you get it appraised and insured accordingly somehow?  I can see you've got a lot of work into your bike but for the most part a salvage title isn't worth much to most ins. companys.  I would probably do like others said and confront the dude with repair costs keeping its salvage status out of the transaction as much as possible, and go for a cash in hand deal from him and use that to repair the damage done.

There is no reason to get your insurance involved at this point -- reporting an accident that they have to cover will hike your rates.

Did you get the other driver's insurance? If so, go through them only. You can try to go through the other driver directly, but he may try to weasel out.

Take the bike to a Honda shop. Show them the damage. Get them to write you up an estimate for complete repair -- however they would do it (but I imagine it would be sourcing used parts and rebuilding, but they should have prices for stuff that is still no longer available in their records). That's what you use to take either to his insurance or to him. No need to double or triple anything -- sure, the guy's an #$%* for trying to leave, but unless you can back up the figure with a legitimate estimate from a legitimate shop, the insurance company won't take it. IF they discover you've doubled or tripled the estimate, they may file a claim for fraud against you.

The fact that it's already got a salvage title might burn you in the end, but I have no idea. The insurance company will try to lowball you, but stick to the written estimate you have. They'll probably try to total it for a lowball figure of what that model would be worth, and if so then you'll have to negotiate. And you should be able to buy it back after the settlement for pennies on the dollar as suggested.

Thanks guys... To be honest I'm pretty good on working with INS companies this is like my 4 big "accident" none my fault. I'm sure some of you remember this same bike was totaled last year and then rebuilt. Usaa is really good to work with and I'm sure they will take care of me at this point.. The question more was would you care of just say oh well and fix it yourself. I'm not trying to screw the guy over yes it upset me that he was thinking of leavening! But my wife did the same thing to a motorcycle, when I showed up to help I found little to no damage but we stayed at the bike for a while! Then we wrote a note saying what happened and left info.. So I understand it happens and I would be pissed if some jerk treated my wife like crap... But still that's why we have INS and that's also why we look before we back up.

USAA there the best but it's not cheap it's fair but not cheap.

I have USAA for my cages.  When I called for moto insurance they transferred me to progressive.

Really loved the service I received when I was involved in a fender bender.  With a mexicali lady who didn't know how to drive a manual thru a yielding intersection.
usaa went the extra mile, and when they found out this gal had basically been making a living they called me and said "well, she's a fraud, but you did bend her bumper, so we're gonna handle everything but she aint getting no cash!"

Usaa knows whats up!
