I.D. this hardware, please?
« on: August 27, 2016, 01:13:08 PM »
I literally bought a bike in boxes. It's a 1973 CL350. The good news is that the P.O. bagged everything. The bad news is that he didn't tag it.
Spent some time today sorting and inventorying it and I can I.D. most of it. There are three bags with some hardware that I'm not sure about. Can anyone I.D. these parts?

(Dang it.....wish I had laid down a quarter or something for taking pics, for size reference)

First up, a pretty clean bolt and spring. Possibly part of the rear brake pedal stuff? I have the larger/longer pivot bolt for the rear brake lever.

Then there's a bag with possible clutch cover bolts? I say that because three of them have O-rings on them and I've seen that on the lower bolts on clutch covers before. But two of them are hex head and the rest are allen bolts. The top end of the engine is disassembled too and this could be part of the head or cam tower for all I know.

Then there's the third bag with some small, clean cross head screws and washers and some sort of special bolt. The one bolt has a smooth, captive type head (sorry...don't know the correct term). Where do these go?

Is it possible that the last bag is intake manifold hardware and the special bolt for the choke linkage?

The spring might be for the clutch lever? The bolt in the last pics looks like a hardware store carriage bolt, possibly 1/4-20 thread. ;)

Yeah, I don't think the carriage bolt belongs and the smaller screws in the last pic could be random frame screws.

I'm pretty sure the first pic with the spring is rear brake related.

It's possible that the middle pic is side cover stuff, but I was going to get a dress up kit for that anyway.

You might be surprised.  That last bolt could be for the chain guard or a fender.

I remember a similar bag of loose parts when I got my CB550 - a bunch of stuff that didn't look like it went anywhere.

Is the first pic with bolt and spring for the kickstand or the center stand?

I've taken to wire-wheeling and then replating all the hardware on the bikes I do which is tons easier and cheaper than chasing oddball NOS stuff. When get it all back I lay it out on a tray by size and the then refer to the parts manual during reassembly for what I need. A set of calipers stays on the bolts tray.

This horrifies a couple of guys I collaborate with, but I find it faster and easier than trying to keep all the parts separate all the way through a restoration.

No, those are already identified. I'm pretty sure the spring is for the rear brake lever return. Still not sure about the bolt, but they were in the same baggie. I seem to have all other rear brake stuff I.D.'d already.

I dont think the spring would be for brake pedal, not strong enough not enough travel...
It does look like maybe the clutch spring
The bolt in same pic to me looks like a centerstand bolt but there should be two.

I think the spring is for the brakelight switch?

Too short for the brake light switch. The center stand bolts and spring are in place. I looked at the other bike and I'm 99℅ sure the spring is for the brake pedal. Still don't know what the bolt is for.

I can't think of any other springs that haven't been mentioned - other than the carburetor return spring.  Don't know if that's accounted for either.

What about the drum brake shoe return spring?
