Cb550 under seat electronics tray
« on: August 28, 2016, 06:09:48 AM »
I was wondering if anyone has build an under the seat electronics tray, and how they did it. Or if anyone has one they would like to sell.

Hey!
I built a few of those for two 550s... I made them out of a 3mm metal sheet. I have the correct measurements somewhere. Let me know if you need them.
I fitted the starter, lock switch, 8 cell Anti Gravity battery and the whole m-unit system in there.

Check out the photos.

Do a Google search, you can spend hours perusing the different possibilities.

Ill see if I find them the next time I go to the garage...

I cut the sides all the way around and bent the walls up, instead of welding the whole thing. looked much better. I welded where the sides meet after, to seal the box. I also welded the whole box to the frame.

Making a metal box is fairly straight forward. Start with some cardboard and make a box that's taped together until you get the right dimensions for your application. Depends what you want in the box. Mine has everything except some fuses and battery so the box can be less deep. I used 16 gauge steel, welded up the sides and powder coated it.

I'd avoid welding the box to the frame. Cal737 recommended I use "nutserts" or "threadserts". All they are are a rivet with threads on the inside. Put them into your frame and you can use button head allens to secure it.

I made a flat "tray" out of aluminum sheet. Bolted below the tank crossmember with nylon spacers & the rear directly to the frame crossmember. Much easier to fabricate than a box, better airflow while still protected and nearly invisible. With the rectifier/regulator upgrade I was able to mount everything with stock wiring harness except the battery which is mounted remotely below> http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=153247.0

Perfect. I plan on putting a lip all the way around to place in the frame from the top then i can put my seat right over it. Something like cognito moto makes.

Yeah i plan on making mine a little deep to fit a small battery and the electronics, then have the ignition coming from the side of the box. I have a 78 cb550 and my ignition sticks straight up from the tripple tree
