Any members on Avon Roadrider AM26?
« on: November 26, 2006, 04:15:52 PM »
Looks t/b a tire available just last month - the sizing is correct for my 500 and data sheet describes use I'm looking for.

For a classic bike, why wouldn't you use a classic tyre?

http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorcycle/?page=tyres&method=showtyre&id=9

Roadrunners use modern compounds and manufacturing techniques but with the classic tread patter that we recognise from the 70's.

I'm running Avon tyres on both my bikes. On my 75 Kawasaki I have Roadrunners, AM20 front and AM21 rear. They er great tyres. I also have Avon on the CB650, AM20 Roadrunner front and AM42 Venom X rear.

I have an avon venom on my DOHC and metzler lazertechs on my cb750 daily rider. I like them a lot and for the kind of hard riding I do the sportbike style tread pattern works out great (a little dodgy in weather but so far no problems). I personally feel you can't be as agressive with a classic tread pattern tire as you can with one of thos sporty slash cut jobbies.

I just ordered a set of Roadriders for my CB350. They appear to be higher speed replacements for the Roadrunner. I got a good price from Tires Unlimited.

My needs are simple: I want the best fit I can get and the best tread design/compound for all around use at a reasonable price. The field really gets cut down on the sizing issue alone. Only Metzler and Continental have stepped up and offered a fitment recommendation for our 500/550 wheels:

Front WM1 rim – 1.85” ID = 3.25/19
Rear  WM2 rim – 2.15” ID = 4.00/18 (Honda says 3.5/18 and 3.75/18 for 500 and 550 respectively)

I know allot of folks are damn happy with the 100/90-19 and 110/90-18 combination and a light search will turn up a mountain of fine tires in those sizes. But, the fact remains that just about every data sheet indicates the 100/90 is recommended for a 2.15” rim. Granted, I’m very limited in experience with motorcycles but I’m real convinced that standing up the side walls at a precise angle is real important in road racing tires for formula cars. The 100/90 is close for sure but in my book it’s a second choice if a precise 3.25” is available. As for the rear – well, we just don’t have a choice since a match to the front in 3.5” or 3.75” tire in a 18” rim just isn’t out there.

After running up and down the tire sheets and reading the poop on all the neat Spitfires, Battleaxes, Venoms, TT100s, K491s et al the list gets chopped down pretty quick on sizing alone:

Metzeler Lasertec 3.25-19M/CTL 54H and 4.00-18M 64V reads real good as an all around tire and is current with latest compound

Conti Super Twin   TK22RC and  TK44RC reads like a possible contender but no retailer carries the TK44 rear????

Conti Blitz TKH23 and TKH24 reads like a nice soft, sticky tire but perhaps wanting in wet weather.

Avon RoadRider AM26 I asked about here. Looks very interesting – Brit wet weather experience, very current compound and a sheet that reads right down my alley for everyday use.

FWIW, I’m leaning to the Avon and Metzeler as a consequence.....

The first upgrade to a new Honda back then was a decent set of tyres, starting with a 425/85 for the rear.

Classic motorrad magazine (Germany) tested 5 new sets of tyres on an older bike. They ran them on a testtrack head to head under normal ridingconditions. The bike used was a 1979 cb900f.
The Bridgestone and Continental were much better suited to the Honda. The tester said even a novice driver on the road would feel the difference between those two and the rest. The Bridgestone took  a narrow victory because it was better at handling and precision. It also performed best in the wet.

-1st PLACE:
Bridgestone BT 45
180 euro/set

-2nd PLACE:
Continental TK11/TK12
180 euro/set

-3th PLACE:
Pirelli Sport Demon
159 euro/set

-4th PLACE:
Metzeler Lasertec
167 euro/set

5th PLACE:
Dunlop Arrowmax GT501
196 euro/set

Just the kind of "too bad" it won't fit I'm talking about:

-1st PLACE: Smallest is a 120/90 for a 2.75" rim in the rear
Bridgestone BT 45
180 euro/set

-2nd PLACE: Smallest is a 130/90 for a 3.0" rim in the rear
Continental TK11/TK12
180 euro/set

and, so on........

Steve, are you referring to the "the obligatory Dunlop TT100 K-81 tires" in this neat little article?
http://www.langkilde.com/~niels/html/mc/hondaCB550.html

I read a few squibs here and there that the K81 has become one of Dunlop's red headed step sons in that it's getting shinned on new compounds. Do you know if this tire is still current in the chemistry department?

Roadrunners use modern compounds and manufacturing techniques but with the classic tread patter that we recognise from the 70's.

We use Roadrunners on the CR, but in a soft race compound.
We checked them last week and they are still like new after 4 seasons drag racing. (not a lota miles ;D)
Although not road legal, I would chance them if I had a classic on the road.

I guess Avon has lost interest in the Roadrunner as only two sizes are offered on the tech sheet- yep, just two: a 4.10-19 and an MT90-16.

I never liked the TT100 myself. Had one on the back of the 500/4 and it was bald down the centre after 5000 miles (bad news on a student grant)
Also tried the Dunlop Red Arrow (I think it was a K181?). It was OK.
But we all liked the Roadrunners the best. 8-10k miles and good grip in the wet. The 425/85 was the weapon of choice as it was wider than stock and fitted the rims (and the swingarm)

No idea about the current compounds really. I just know that they are better than 30 years ago.

Now let's talk about Pirelli Strada Diablo which is the choice of many sports-tourer owners nowadays as a better tyre than the Bridgestone BT020.

For what it's worth, Avon don't make tyres anymore as they sold the business to Cooper Tire & Rubber Co (www.coopertire.com).
I don't know where they are made now - but maybe in the US?

Yet more excellent tires not even close to fitting.... the field of choice really isn't that big for us is it? I got an e-mail back from a USA retailer explaining why he didn't have a tire I was interested in:

"What gives is they are not sold in the U.S. Only Europe. There are many makes/models of tires that are like this. I can name about 20 off the top of my head. Avon is notorious for this.  We occasionally get customers like yourself who visit a manufacturers universal website and then get upset when we can't supply them with the tire that they see online. Simple fact is, we cannot get them, nor can any dealer in the United States. Let us know if we can help further. Thanks."

By looking at prices in Europe I don't think many buy and drop ship to US.

Cooper is out of Findley, OH and news release indicates Avon still operates as independent sub. Now, that's not to say production hasn't moved to Asia like so many others but I'm certain they are not rebranded Coopers... I looked at that with real concern.

Just got a set of AM26s today for mt 350 project.  I was happy to see that they were made in Jolly Olde England so Avon operations must still be working.  Sadly the snows are coming and I won't be able to test them out until spring.

I got this e-mail back from Tires Unlimited:

Not enough feedback one way or the other to make a recommendation.  We can tell you it is Avon’s replacement for the AM18.  It is a V‑speed rated tire (149 mph).  Avon’s a good tire company and I would not hesitate to give them a try.  Besides, what’s your alternative?
Thank you, T.J. Heatherly -

Tires Unlimited is indeed listing AM18 as "discontinued" FWIW.

For the record, Michelin Macadam 50's (50E front, 50 rear) are available in 3.25/19 front and 4.00/18 rears.  They're favoured by many BMW riders and are now on my bike.

However, I opted for the 100/90/19 and 110/90/18 sizes as they were more readily available and are slightly meatier than the original sizes (4 inches = 101.6mm vs. 110)

Thanks for the input, Tintin. I found this post by a BMW guy who put the tire through a pretty good test... you may also find useful:

http://www.verrill.com/moto/macadams/macadamtest.shtml

It looks like the front tire cupping in the above complaint has been solved by modification to 50E. Are you having ant front wheel cupping issues?

Price sure looks good at:
