2 questions: POR15 quality and Hondabond used on carb boot o-ring
« on: September 02, 2016, 01:44:14 PM »
Alight two things I want to ask. Does this POR15 coating look bad and can I use a small amount of Hondabond to keep an o-ring in a carb boot, the ones that are closest to the engine.
POR15
Front of the tank

Back of the tank

Last time this tank was lined there where stalactites of kream, it was very bad.  That is what I get for trusting a guy who runs  bike shop from his garage. I did everything by the instructions. Instead of letting the tank dry right side up I suspended it upside down and I may have done some subtle knee bouncing when I poured.. it out.  Anyways how long will it last if this is bad?

I have these pesky o-rings for my carb boots.
They won't stay in. I clamped the o-rings in the boots for a week and they popped straight out again. Can I glue them in? The only thing I have that can tolerate the heat is Hondabond 4. Would a light coating on the o-rings help?

I think the POR-15 will be OK.   Though the big question is how well was the surface prepared beneath the urethane?

Great, i was worried about those pores that were there along with those lumps. For preparing the tank I actually added a step that I think should be considered with all tank liner kits, acetone. I used the whole kit per instructions but the degreaser, the first stage, was not cutting it. Maybe the POR15  kit assumes that there is no previous liner because the solution couldn't remove the bad liner even with sheet rock screws and washers rummaging around. So I looked up how to remove a tank liner and an eight year old on you tube with his 50cc Honda showed the best way, acetone. It completely liquified the previous liner and turned it into milk. I think it also eats rust but it left behind grey flakes (maybe metal). I pressure washed and rinsed whatever that was left behind and proceeded with the second solution, metal prep. The metal prep worked well left everything metallic looking and I rinsed out with water. I angled a hairdryer in the top the tank for an hour to get it really warm to the touch. Thinking over this again I'm wondering if acetone would have been a better drying agent, but the hairdryer worked. I did have some noticeable powdery flash rust inside and more towards where the hairdryer was directly making contact. The kit says it binds to flash rust so I poured it in after letting the tank cool off in a few. The picture I showed of the pores in the POR15 was where the highest concentration of flash rust was. I'm guessing that's what happens when it binds to rust. Anyways, any thoughts on Hondabonding my intake boot o-rings?

The POR15 looks good to me too. How about just replacing the O Rings?

The o-rings are new i have  7 left from ordering the boots and a complete gasket kit. I broke one out of anger. I wrapped one around a spray can for two hours and it was maybe a couple mm wider, but that still didn't work.

POR15 looks fine.
The O-rings should fit properly if they're the right ones, I'd be worried if they're too small. IF they're very close, try a little dab of superglue to hold them in place when you mount them. You don't need to worry about whatever you use to hold them in place holding up to the heat -- once they are mounted, the O-rings aren't going to move.

Well the glue worked and I scratched away the dried glue that would make contact with the engine. I think the o-rings are like the carb gaskets but even more annoying. With the carb gaskets I  just clamp the gaskets in overnight and they'll take the shape of the bowl.
