Cam Chain Tensioner (inside the case)
« on: August 30, 2016, 04:52:53 PM »
OK... so my 1973 CB750's cam chain was making a lot of noise.  So I make the adjustment making sure that I was 15 degrees past TDC on the #1 compression stroke.  The bike still makes the noise; so I take the actual cam chain tensioner off to make sure all the moving parts were moving.

The actual chain tensioner and spring are in excellent shape... the spring has a lot of tension and the 'shoe' looks brand new.  So why does it not seem to have an effect on the noise?

At this point I should mention that the bike sat for the last ten years and I only recently got it running.

While the tensioner was off I took the opportunity stick my finger/thumb into tensioner access hole and touch the actual part that is supposed to apply tension to the chain.  It is basically a plastic wheel that rides on the chain with a pivot point.  That part of this mechanical operation did not move one bit as I applied more and more pressure.  Does this sound like a problem?  If I could not move it with my finger I am sure that the spring loaded tensioner was not going to move it.

Has anyone ever had experience with this?
