OK earthquake felt as far away as Penn?
« on: September 03, 2016, 09:01:09 AM »
I woke up ready to go and during my Morning pee-pee the ground started shaking, a reported 5.6. It was reported under Pawnee Oklahoma and was reportedly felt almost a thousand miles away.

Back when California was having 7+  quakes it was reported that that we lived in one of the most geologically stable areas in the country. When we suddenly became the most active about 5 years ago it was blamed on fracking and injection wells. Since then there has been a moratorium on injection wells in the active areas, but this morning we shook pretty hard. One of the wall guitars fell off the shelf, other than that I haven't really looked for any other damage.

It was at about 7:00 am central time US. Anyone else feel it?

I didn't feel anything in Kalamazoo, Mi.  We had a couple of quakes also in 2015 that I felt. One of my friends has a motorcycle business in Galesburg Mi where his building got some damage.

Ironically, it was reportedly felt in Galesburg Illinois also. I didn't notice it but I'd slept in and was still in bed.

A 5.6 quake isn't that big a deal. I'm surprised it was felt as far away as it was. I was about 250 miles away from the Loma Prieta quake in Calif. 1989 and didn't feel it. It was felt about 25 miles south of me though. I have been in a few in the 6.5 and lower range so to me.....5.6 isn't too bad.

You're right about the scale, a seven is more than 10 times more poweful a 5.6. but these are  close to the surface  so as one report describes it "like a bomb under the city"  and was felt in Arizona.
