What Does He Have?
« on: September 05, 2016, 07:50:17 PM »
Cleaning dad's shed out.  He road this CB750 all over the western US 80's and 90's.  As he upgraded this unit got pushed to the back of the shed and forgotten.  I've been reading about the "Sandcast" numbers though this one isn't a sandcast.  Is it worth restoring, parting out or iron pile?  Pics wouldn't upload.  It's in pretty tough shape but it will run.

When uploading pictures directly there is a file size limit smaller than what it says it is.

You can cheat around it. Add a post with just one picture, then when that takes you can use the modify button to add more pictures.

Engine is probably about April/May 1970. Might have been an engine replacement due to the chain and cracked case problem. I'd vote for a restore and have fun.

Just for info my 1970 is a March 1970 with a s/n of 29000. 55000 s/n was 1971 in JULY.

IF YOU PART OUT I'M INTERESTED IN THE ENGINE.

Unlike my dads yammie xs750 triple.  Your pop's old CB750 will never be "too far gone" to refurb/restore.

Give the bike a good detailed cleaning and start the tune up process.

For $150 you may have yourself a shiny running motorcycle!

BomberMann650 - that's funny because I was on a 1977 purple XS750s with a Vetter following this CB750 for a 4,019 mile trip back in 84'.  A year later I was 22 years old and working a V65 really hard.  I still took this CB out just to hear it though.  Mid summer with heat in the 90's someone installed the oil cooler.  They failed to flair the ends before sliding it onto the hose and clamping.  Unknowing I rode to town, spotted a buddy of mine and gave it the gas to pass him.  When I pulled back in at around 50mph the rear end slid right out from under me.  I rolled over and over peeling hide off my arms and hips.  Scarier was with each rotation I could see the 750 rolling and skidding with sparks flying coming right at me.  I ground to a halt.  The bike ground to a halt.  I got myself up, the buddy had pulled over and stood the bike up while I kept my cookies down.  I put the hose back on, started it up and the oil light stayed off so I took off gingerly listening for any odd sounds.  It worked fine other than broken windshield.  About 3/4 of a mile from dad's the oil light started to flicker so I shut it off and pushed it the rest of the way.  Sweaty, gravel and asphalt imbedded in my skin I still felt bad for that old bike.

It is.  We replaced the fairing Plexiglas, rear signals, taillight and a rear foot peg.  Later that fall an uncle rode it to Colorado with us.  Its got more stories than Mother Goose.
