Exhaust pipe question
« on: September 05, 2016, 09:19:44 AM »
Howdy everyone:

When I took title to the 1969, the #2 pipe was discolored.  I had the pipe rechromed and after some 3,000 miles, the discolor re-appeared and I am mystified.  I asked two Honda reps and they said that sometimes the pipes that came from the factory were defective, and I guess I have one.  My question to you is - is there something that I could use to coat the inside of this pipe and have it rechromed?  I was told something ceramic might work, but does anyone know who makes this ceramic?  Thanks to all in advance.

Hi heat paint, pour it in the pipe, cork it..run it back and forth to second bend.
To late though if its discolored.

I'd check each header pipe temp and plugs to see if there's something going on with cylinder #2

Everybody - thanks for all the responses.

tlbrandth, flybox1 and FunJimmy: - I have the HF digital readout and use it often on all my bikes - headers as well as oil.  Basically, #1 & 4 read about 10 degrees lower than #2 & #3 and the readings are consistent.  I will make a friendly bet with you all and say it is a defective pipe, and I will get you an answer as to the actual readings.

754: Some buddies on the ICOA site have recommended Kreem Blueshield to coat the inner of #2.  I'll give that a shot and let you know.

ekpent: Sure.  The original owner chopped the front fender and removed both sets of winkers.  My older brother bought this bike in 1970 and put some 24,000 miles on it, bought a Harley and sold the bike to me.  The bike has the original frame, sandcast motor, gauges, exhaust, fuel tank and rims and are, to my belief, all original to the bike.  I am still working on it - a proverbial money pit, but I ride it a lot and get lots of looks.  I have had only 3 people who whooped when they looked at the motor and saw it was a sandcast :P.

It kinda kooks like you gentlemen are correct, but I need to do a few more tests on the carbs.  The air jets on #1 and #2 are somewhat clogged whereas #3 and #4 are WFO.  It seems to be that these air jets are pressed in and I am out of my league here as to how to fix.  Any ideas anybody?  Thanks to all in advance.

Spray carb cleaner and a brass wire.
Ultrasonic cleaner
Carb dip
...or some combination of all three  ;D

You can pick up a high E guitar string to use to clean out the jets combined with carb cleaner.
