How to test coils off bike?
« on: November 26, 2006, 11:37:02 PM »
I have a set of 750 coils. Is there a way to test them without the bike?
I was going to sell them but wanted to make sure they work first...

If you don't want to start measuring impedence with a meter, I'd say hook them up to a spark plug and zap 12V across the input. Watch for spark.

...if u have a multimeter test each coil by inserting a probe in each of the wires, I think the resistance is around 25 ohms, don't quote me on the decimal placement, but u'll see something around 25...   ::)

Do like Steve says.
Make sure you have a common ground for the plug leads to coil body though and use an 8~10mm gap instead of plugs and caps Flick power to 12 v
Dont use a metal table ;D

Many years ago, my room-mate at Uni (who ended up as my Best Man at my wedding) reckoned that he could test ignition coils by sticking his finger in the plug cap.  20kV yeowee!  He survived to father two children (surprisingly)
