Tank fit on CB750
« on: September 11, 2016, 12:13:25 PM »
I picked up a tank today at a swap meet hoping to use it on my 78 CB750k. The guy I bought it from didn't know what Honda it came off but it looked right from memory.

When I got home I popped it on the bike and the mounting points line up and it seems to fit fine. The only issues are that the petcock is on the other side and there's a bit of a gap with my custom seat. Does anyone know what tank this is? I thought it was a 69-76 CB750 tank, but now I'm not so sure. It's definitely smaller than my 78 tank.

The petcock changed sides about 1975 ??? Yes, the 1978 tanks were longer I think.

Early tanks 76 and older are shorter and not as long. Also the petcocks on those tanks swapped sides too.

The 77/78 tanks are longer. If you want to swap sides with the petcock that is a lot of extra work.

Definitely a 750 tank. The 550 has the gas lid eccentrically placed to the right a little more. I probably have a 78 750 tank in the garage if you are interested....

...And, getting a stock tank to fit a custom seat often requires some "work". Especially when you use a stock tank from an earlier year  ;)

Yeahhh, I'm less worried about the gap than the petcock. I might just stick with my 78 tank. I just prefer the look of the older ones with the cap on top.

I have a k6 and that looks to be the exact same to what I have. If the petcock is on the left side of the tank, it looks to be a 76'. If it is on the right side... well, I dunno.

FWIW i just put the petcock off my 75 750 tank..same as yours, on a 400 four tank.. 75 I think.
So that may help determine wether your 77/78 petcock will work.
