Anyone here have myodaeopsia - does it affect your riding
« on: September 02, 2016, 12:11:19 PM »
I enjoy what many would refer to as "rude good health". Despite all I have thrown at my poor body, I'm still fairly slim, fit and active though I turn 59 in a few days. As the song goes "my hair is still curly and my eyes are still blue" etc etc. I've not been biking much since I sold my beloved Fireblade in 2013 but as my RC30 and NC35 both arrive at the termination of meticulous restoration, it's time to don the helmet once more.

However, about two years ago I noticed a bit of difficulty with my right peeper. Just funny things floating in my eye that just momentarily clouded my vision in that eye. Mentioned it to my doctor, he had me see a specialist who shone all sorts of funny things in there and said it's a case of (in French) "Mouches Volantes", or in English "Floaters" but the true clinical name is "myodaeopsia".
Apparently it's no big deal, but it can't be corrected and is just part of the aging process.  >:(
But as I have not been riding while this has been apparent, I'm a little concerned that this could affect my innate propensity to ride in a spirited fashion.

Anyone else have this condition, and has it caused you concerns in your riding ?

I've had "floaters" since forever - my eye doctor has never been concerned with it.  My eyesight is such that I require corrective lenses - and have since the ripe old age of 4 - and neither the floaters nor my weak left eye have had any impact on riding.  Aside from the fact that perhaps I turn my head a bit further than I used to.

So long as your peripheral vision is good - no worries.

Thanks Gene.

I only find it a nuisance when I change my focus. If I'm looking straight ahead for a while there is no problem, but then if I shift my gaze in a different direction, it seems to set these things moving about again before it settles down. Sort of like one of those snow cloud things that kids have.

My peripheral vision is fine. Many women would say it's too good.

Good to know I'm not alone.

Hey, guys!, "floaters" are not something you have to put up with. They can be eliminated easily with appropriate drops for the eyes. I was experiencing them a couple of years ago. Sitting at my table and looked up, had one really dark one move across
my sight line that looked like a damn mouse running across the floor! Did some research and found that they are a common
sign of a necessary protein deficient in our diet. Found this website, http://www.claritycarnosineeyedrops.com/index.php, and read over all the info there.  Started using the drops and haven't had any problem since.  ;D

Have you any idea how these drops change the consistency of the vitreous humour within the eye itself ?

Kev, there is considerable research info on the polypeptide chains and vision on the sub-links from the home page. I wouldn't want to get into a long and boring dissertation on ocular anatomy and physiology here. I believe you will find the answers you want there on the site.  ;)

My left eye has many dark floaters in it . Sometimes really annoying and sometimes barely noticeable. I turn 32 in a few days and honestly I've only even noticed this problem within the last 3-4 years. My doctor said it was perfectly normal as well. I have one tiny dot in my field of vision that I can always find if I try hard enough. Because I'm always working with metal, I was convinced it was a microscopic piece of debris. I figure regular bacteria floaters are larger than it so it must be microscopic. I'm a diabetic so I get a yearly in depth eye exam and so far, well, so good.  I keep my fingers crossed. The more medical problems I develop, the more spirited I ride.

That's it exactly with me also. This won't stop me riding, just one more thing to take into account.

thanks for the feedback.

Same here, it really pisses me off, looks like little bits of fluff on my eye, makes my vision a bit blurry at times, I can actually see it quite clearly when lying down looking at the ceiling, they seem to move a bit...I'll check out RevDocs site....

I was reading this with interest, thinking how difficult it must be to live with this and actually feeling quite sympathetic. Then Mick had to mention 'looking at the ceiling', which I automatically did. AAAaaaaggh! Now I've got them too! Thanks a bunch fellas!

My wife had this problem a few months back. It was taken very seriously at first, as a possible cause of floaters can be a detached retina. Provided this isn't the case, then yep, usually not anything to worry about. If it's something that comes on suddenly though, it's imperitive to get it checked out quickly.

The floaters in my eyes aren't so bad but my tinnitus is beginning to be a major annoyance. When I mow with my new quieter mower it sounds like Cicada buzzing. I just try to not think about it.

I have that problem as well Don, Playing in a band and practicing in small rooms did it for me, I'm used to it now, I just have problems hearing lower frequencies and my ears distort if loud noises are close......

I've had eye floaters for years..still ride BTW. Just an eye exam a couple of months ago. Have what's called Weiss-Ring floater in left eye.  Other than that..no pathological conditions..and vision 20/20 corrected.  Standard ophthalmic advice is to "just live with it"..which generally speaking I can.  As some have already said here..many have them for many years w/o problems (some since birth).  Then something seems to make one more aware of them (increased stress in one's life..trauma..increasing nearsightedness..etc.). I've personally decided to just live with it..but if they increase significantly or I feel their too bothersome..have considered getting YAG laser treatment..which is said to be highly successful (tho a little expensive).  Following URL explains more (informative YouTube videos also): http://www.thefloaterdoctor.com/expectations/

I've been seeing stuff and hearing stuff for a few years now. It is all about getting older, embrace it, work through it, ride on!
