Where were you 15 years ago today?
« on: September 11, 2016, 01:53:55 AM »
I woke up at at the Alaskan Hotel, downtown Juneau  about the time the second plane hit . Local time was before 6 am. There was a guy in the hallway with a thick New York accent whining about being stuck in Juneau as their flight had been cancelled back home. When he described it to his wife I thought " You a funny guy. " I wasn't really awake fully.

The bar was open unusually early to let the people stranded watch on TV. I saw the towers collapse live there. Even the little piper 6 planes were grounded 4,000 miles away, so I was stranded, too.

It pissed off my pilots who lost several days of peak tourist season commerce,

Just finished my 1st round as a security guard here in South East Queensland. About 11.45 PM our time i was listening to the radio in disbelief. A bit like Orson Wells  "war of the worlds" . At the time they thought there were more hijacked planes that what there was. Very surreal.

I was taking my dog for an annual vet visit (still have her....best dog ever).

I'm confused about your poll. ISIS didn't even exist on 9/11.

Was having a meeting with my financial advisor that day and remember watching it unfold on TV in disbelief with all the office staff huddled around. I remember hearing on the car radio about a plane hitting the tower shorly before arriving and thought what a terrible 'accident'.

9th grade Earth Science class. A teacher ran in crying telling our teacher. She turned on a TV in the room just in time to see the second plane hit.

Lol not to laugh but pasting letters is the worst.

I had literally JUST got my license a day or two prior and was driving between high schools for my automotive program that was held at a school a town over. Howard was on, and that's when I heard it. Once I got to my home school every classroom had the TVs on and I was able to view the second plane hit. I turned around and walked out got home to call my dad but for some reason he had stayed home that day to paint the interior of our house. I had many friends and his own co workers who lost friends and family that day. People that were just never heard from again.

I was in Derry Northern Ireland. At the time I was managing outsourced technical support partners for a big American manufacturer. I had lunch with all the team leaders, then stayed on with the MD of the company. Chatting away about the plans for the next year, then the sh*t started coming on the TV. The two of us were transfixed. After about an hour, I realised that behind us there were about 60 persons where previously the room was empty. Nobody had made a sound on entering. Part of the reason they were there was that the support lines died, nobody was calling and they had all come down to see why. It was surreal. Never want to see something like that again.

Just two nights ago  TV here showed the footage that a French TV crew filmed with Firehouse 1 and captured the first images of the strike on the North tower. Horrible then, horrible now.

I was living in Garden Grove California, still married to my first wife, working for Siemens finishing up the Getty Center project and working on various UCLA projects.  Forth son was 1 yo.  Wasn't riding motorcycles though still managed to hang on to the 350F from before I was married.

Edit: I was on my way to Downtown Disney at 6:30 am, to do some work before the shops opened, listening to the radio.  Once me and a coworker were there, we were told that Disneyland would not open that day.

I was teaching in a residential treatment facility for adolescents with serious emotional disabilities. We had a tv on in a conference room but had to keep it to ourselves because some of the students would have not handled it well at all. I saw a bit of the live footage but we all really went about the day as normally as possible.

Could not believe what I was watching on TV. My flag is at half staff today.

I was in New York in March 2001, celebrating my fortieth birthday with my wife and a couple of friends. We had lunch in the restaurant on top of one of the towers (Window to the World?) and on the way back out my friend and I had our shoes shined in the mall at the bottom.

I pissed off the bloke who shined my shoes, because I didn't tip him at first. When I got outside, my mate pointed out my error and I turned to see him staring at me. I felt absolutely terrible - of course, the tips were a lifeline to these guys and I should have known instead of being a typical tourist prick. I went back, apologised, and gave him a generous thank you.

I watched the towers go down live on TV six months later. The shoe-shine guy came to me immediately, I just hope he was one of the lucky ones. I can see his face clear as day now. The staff in the restaurant, probably not so lucky.

I know it probably sounds a tenuous link to some, but this day (9/11) is always a poignant day for me.

Search for Operation Mazhar. I was there at the time and it was not pleasant. Subsequently downgraded as not being a major threat, for me with what I saw in the evidence room in Scotland Yard I was scared sh**less. And I don't scare easily.

I was due to give evidence in court, but was excused when they changed their plea to guilty.

No wonder I am more reclusive than H. Hughes.

Fifteen years ago, I didn't believe the story.
I Still don't.  *puts on tinfoil hat*

The caliphate (which is what they are called in the region they effect, *hint, it aint murica) was an enemy that took our US politicians 4 months to identify.

4 months of secret meetings trying to determine if there was an enemy to feud with.

This last 15 years has absolutely destroyed my faith in the US government and it's strong arm military.

Meanwhile, the national guard has been mobilized to protect big oil pipeline builders from those pesky injuns.

I was on my way to work and heard about it on the radio. When I got to work everyone was huddled around the TV and we all watched it over and over in disbelief. An hour or 2 later the boss said we weren't going to open the shop that day. I ended up going to the local watering hole with a few guys from work and we just watched it over and over again. Seemed everyone was in a big daze all day long. It was my granddaughter's second birthday who is celebrating her 18th today.

I was working at the printing company my (then) wife worked at in Wilmington, Massachusetts. I was a driver for the shipping dept. I was sitting in the van mapping out my stops in a spiral bound paper map book when it came on the radio. They first said it was thought that it was an accident and it was thought a small aircraft had hit the tower, then minutes later the second one came in and everyone knew it was no accident.
My (then) wife was pregnant with our first child a daughter, born the following January.
I remember sitting there with tears streaming down my face thinking about what a #$%*ed up world she was going to have to grow up in.

I was doing my morning ritual before work in Sioux Falls.  Had NBC on and heard Katie Couric say something about a plane crash.  After S-S-S I went through the living room and saw there was an issue but was a little late and shut the tube off.  I got in the car, turned on Mike and Mike and they were talking about it. By the time I got to the office I was beginning to grasp the beginning of the situation.  The head of our leasing department's daughter worked in Manhattan in a building a mile or so away.  Our office was on pins and needles because the daughter's fiancĂ© was supposed to be in the south tower at 9:00 am.  Around 4:00 we got word his meeting had been cancelled.  Before 911 I heard the old folks talk about Normandy D-Day, Pearl Harbor and such.  After Sept 11 I understood better about a national shock.
It's hard to top the sound of an old 4-pipe CB750 going through the Eisenhower Tunnel.

I was in a middle school history class, and a television was brought in. The teacher was a very good man and explained to the children that there are evil people in the world etc etc. We ended comforting the young, crying 12-13 year olds and ... it was sad and very difficult to see young minds poisoned by such hatred.
