Engine bolt sets/kits?
« on: September 11, 2016, 06:51:12 PM »
Where is a good place to buy engine bolt kits? I want to replace all the bolts on the engine cases etc.

Hex vs allen vs phillips? Any preference?

I understand anti seize is an absolute must if going with stainless.

Stainlesscycle.com is excellent, but it won't be every engine bolt, just the covers. 4i to1.com is also a good bet.

Thanks! I saw these kits on ebay but wasn't sure which was the best. I see some come with just the bolts and some include washers. Not sure which is the preferred set on the boards :)

The last link you included is the actual axle bolts for mounting the engine. I haven't seen these around yet!  Does anyone have a US supplier for these?

You will struggle to find a few specific case bolts (for the 500/550 at least) that are 155mm in length. Most currently available stainless hex or socket caps stop at 100mm over the counter. I use www.allensfasteners.com and buy ARP in either hex or 12-pt. They cost more, but they are by far the strongest (not really needed on side covers, etc) and widely available bolts out there.

Thanks for the site Cal!

I need to replace the front engine mount bolts on my engine when I get ready for install. The bolts that attach the engine to the frame using the two brackets. Does anyone have a source for these bolts?

Edit: just did a search for the front mount bolts are they are M10x80. Ironically it was a post by you Cal

I have a stainless engine bolt kit I got on eBay.. I haven't used it yet, but I've heard stainless bolts are much weaker than regular bolts...is that true?

What we need to do is put together a complete bolt size list and then people can order what they need or get the whole kit from McMaster or their favorite fastener shop.

After doing some searching throughout the forums, I ended up buying a complete kit from http://www.stainlesscycle.com. I also purchased the front engine mount bolts, lock washers and nuts as well since they tend to be harder to find.

It may be cheaper to purchase these kits rather than assembling a kit on our own.

I think the point we are trying to get to is to be able to buy a set of NOS type bolts and screws is it not? I personally have no interest whatsoever in allen bolts...
Be that as it may, I have a couple of spare engines and Im going to strip one and do a simple exercise on what the cost would be to get them nickel plated and then offer an exchange service, or alternatively, go to a supplier and ask for a package of all the enclosed bolts in one bag....
Is that the direction some people would like me to go?
But I will only do early SOHC's up till about 77 when those hondamatic things came out....

That is your best and cheapest bet I have found so far for JIS fasteners. Come in SS if you want as well as Zinc.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Good quality kits made by a member of sohc4 for over a decade.
