Old fart question re Medicare Part D
« on: November 27, 2006, 03:04:09 PM »
Kind of embarassing, but does anyone here have it?  How did you pick your company/plan?  Are they all pretty much the same?  Time is running out!!!

Uncle Ernie,

My wife and I both work (well I retired from there) Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. My wife recently became manager in the Medicare area. I know for one thing the Medicare Drug program was designed by idiots as far as I am concerned. When she gets home, which should be in about an hour, if you like, I can have here get on here and give the skinny. I don't have to deal with it so far, so I've ignored it. ::)

Old fart - it helps that you are intelligent and web-literate.  Go to http://www.medicare.gov/medicarereform/drugbenefit.asp which is a good primer of the benefit.   Did your former employer send you a letter telling you you have "credible coverage?"  This means do they provide you a drug benefit at least as good as what medicare offers.  If you have it....don't worry, you don't need to sign up now, and you don't face escalating costs to sign up later.  If you DO NOT HAVE CREDIBLE COVERAGE, SIGN UP NOW.  Go to http://www.medicare.gov/MPDPF  for a personalized plan comparison for drug plans in your area.

Good luck.  It is complicated.

Regards, Gary  (a 39y.o. who happens to know a bit about Medicare PDPs)

I am not dealing with it directly YET and like Bob and I was not paying attention. I am taking care of my Mother in Laws benefits since her English is not really there, and I am finding it a Nightmare. That plan really needs to be scrapped. Any skinny you have Bob should be shared.

Heffay- that was pretty dang funny.

I have Cobra from my last employer, but it runs out in a couple of months, so I figure this is the time to sign up for plan D.  I already have Medicare because of a disability.  I'm taking 8 drugs, some of which are blow-your-mind expenso, and only 2 are available as generics so far.   If I don't do something... yow

Sorry, just noticed the replies today, thought everyone was squared away. I did chat with my wife on this and she too said the best first step is to check the Medicare web site indicated by Gar. I would post some general info if she had it, but beyond what the web site might suggest, specifics get more complex depending on one's personal situation. Uncle Ernie and BobbyR, sent you eMails also.
