Oil Level
« on: September 13, 2016, 03:53:36 PM »
Question regarding the oil level... the manual states to unscrew the dip stick and then wipe it off and re insert without screwing it in. This seems odd to me as I'm not sure you'd get an accurate reading if not fully seated. Am I correct or no? Also is there oil that gets trapped in any other areas that wouldn't account for the level?

Bike is a 78 550K. Any help is appreciated.

The area between the two marks is the "serviceable range"
Not threading it all the way in moves the serviceable range higher, almost 1/2"  reckon.
All it means is ya get to put a little extra oil in the engine

You'll get a fine reading. Some oil will stay up in the head and in the oil filter and cover. Honda must have accounted for that.

Center stand, dip stick unscrewed and the level should be between the lines. Nothin' to it :)

With stationary motors they are are generally screwed in to check, with motorcycles they're dipped in without screwing in - that's just how it is...

I usually just give it a 1/4 turn to lock the threads so that it's secure (won't fall off into the grass).

But yeah - every small engine I own uses that method.
