I finally got it to play. Good job and the other team really hit it hard too. I think you had it won even if they got theirs started.

Oh, no doubt!
It was a "chopper" - parts, stance, attitude.
Not to detract from the other team - they fabbed up a tank and fender, presented a complete bike - but it reminded me of the Sturgis edition Super Glide that HD put out in the 80s

USMC5811 - I can absolutely see that. He wanted to put his own spin on it and he did a great job. But I agree our bike was more of the mark that they asked for. However, I believe it would have been really close as the judges aren't really fans of choppers and wanted a more comfortable ride. But that's not what they asked us to build...  We built a chopper through and through.  Unfortunately choppers aren't "comfortable" or "easy to ride" bikes.  I think woolie hated our bike.  But I think thats mainly due to the fact that he just hates ALL choppers. Haha.

Yeah, I got that vibe from Woolie almost from the get go when he was looking at the built bikes. Not much positive to say.  His views are not as wide open as another judge who seems to command the most facetime on the camera.  Definitely a pecking order with the judges.  Wonder what they judges are getting paid.

How are the sleeping areas? They would have to be pretty well sound insulated to not have a lot of noise keeping you awake, if that were an issue with everyone working until they are about ready to drop.

RAF122S - Yeah. He definitely has been judging them as if we had months to build the bikes... there are obviously going to be some wishes and wants at the end of the build. But we had 72hrs to build the things let alone get really nice parts for them in that time frame...

The living quarters were well.... crap.  We called quickly declared them "Guantanamoto". Plywood walls, cots, and a single oriental rug in the middle. It was ok as my team didn't sleep for the entire 72hrs.

USMC5811 - hahaha! Point taken. He has not!

The original concept of the show included the possibility of bracketed competition, with the winners facing off against one another until a final season winner.  I think that would have been utterly brutal on the competitors.

The producers here made out well.  They got very talented builders at an extremely low production cost.  The competition was real the show is pretty fun to watch.

CB750 Cafe Racer Fan - Our contracts due have provisions for being on the show again. Not sure what will come of that if anything.

Those contracts (as drafted) are pretty horrible.  Extremely low payment for appearances, crummy liability provisions and no right to royalties for when the show re-airs (or for syndication).  But that said, if you want to get your name out, it's great exposure.  If they bring back the winners, you'll have more bargaining power for a new contract.

I am surprised by many of the names being featured with many having had several bikes on Bike EXIF...I guess it may be because I have watched the designs being cranked out the past several years that I am familiar with the names.

While I don't think he is actively taking on work or advertising I have seen Never2Old turn out some fabulous work for members here.  To paint a bike in this compressed timeframe is extremely challenging to put it mildly.

I wonder what an extra set of hands would do for the builds.

Also I was kind of shocked in a small way that one team so far has rendered quickly the design ideas on a tablet.  That is a modern approach for developing the look for a bike based on input from the customer (show) in this case.  I was pleased to see that.

I hope they make it a little more realistic with a 4 day build and another pair of hands, the bikes would be a nice notch up in quality and really they should force everyone to take a 8 hour sleep window after 2 days.

A couple builds have been almost sketchy on safety because of the time constraints.

RAF122S - I doubt they will change the layout of the show as they have proven it is possible to do. I am also not sure that an extra person would help all that much. We were already fumbling over one another as is. The 3rd person was typically idle most of the time or doing all the tidying up. So a 4th would have less to do. If I had a 4th, I would probably bring on another fabricator.

An extra day would be nice. But I don't believe that it would solve the "sketchy factor" its a bike built in 3 days and a bike built in 4 is no less sketchy. Lol But they weren't built to ride across country or even to be given to a customer at the end. They needed to function as a motorcycle should and be able to withstand a little abuse. I think if anything, once the clock stopped after 72hrs. If we would be given an additional 6 hours to only address safety or structural items would be great. You wouldn't be allowed to build anything or modify the design. Only address safety concerns or even be able to dial in suspension or tuning issues.

The tablet rendering was done by Dave Mucci with the Indian build.  That build was extremely challenging to do any drastic customization in 3 days, since virtually no aftermarket parts existed (show was filmed months after Indian released the bike), plus fuel injection; plus electronics you can't simply remove without hacking the electronics components AND the frame is kinda fugly.  The producers led the contestants to believe they would be working on older donor bikes.

I think an extra day would allow for more adventurous fabrication, more time to get parts shipped, better paint and more time to get things dialed in (like that jockey shifter).  I agree that an extra pair of hands might get in the way.

I do like the Dirtbag Challenge http://thedirtbagchallenge.com/info/
1. One month build time
2. One thousand dollar budget (includes the price of the donor bike, all parts, and all work)
3. One hundred miles (on the morning of the show, meet up with the other Dirtbags and ride at least one hundred miles over every type of road WITHOUT a chase vehicle)
4. No Harleys

At least they are not racing them like a particular funny racing series for cars that requires the car to cost less than $500? Or was it $300?

Sounds like the "after hours" race that some NASCAR legends used to hold at Jimmy Spencer's family salvage yard after the Pocono races....
...also sounds like a buttload of fun

JW -- what you guys did in 72 hours with that very limited budget was nothing short of impressive.  Not many teams could execute as much in so little time (with no sleep), and without any in-fighting/drama.  BRAVO!

I'm still trying to figure out how you finagled those bargains with Yoshi.
