CB750: carb sync & cylinder misfire
« on: September 14, 2016, 09:41:49 AM »
I've been having an issue lately where it feels like one cylinder is misfiring on my CB750F. The misfire happens under load and when just cruising down the road and doesn't increase or decrease with more/less throttle. I think it's #2, as the electrode on the #2 plug looks lighter than the other three (which are all similar to each other).

I've pulled the PD carbs and they're totally clean. Replaced two air box boots where I thought there was an air leak. All electrics from the points plate to the plugs are new... The bike runs as it should except for this intermittent misfire on once cylinder. I'm discounting bad gas, as that would effect all cylinders. I'm also discounting electrics, since if it was the coil or points it would affect more than one cylinder.

It's been years since I last sync'd these carbs, and I'll be checking them tonight. Could a lack of sync cause one cylinder to misfire? Could a lack of sync cause one cylinder to be lean?
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

adjust cam chain
valve adjustment
timing/advance...
clear tube test bowl fuel level.  make adjustments as needed.
Vacuum sync.

butt dyno.

report back.

..and check your plug boots (ohms) as well.
Get it in to clean copper.  Make sure the spark isnt jumping.

Cam chain/valves/points all checked/set around 800 miles ago. Will check the plug boots.

Still, can a lack of sync cause one cylinder to misfire or cause one cylinder to be lean?

sure, as one is pulling more vacuum than another.
fuel height plays a big part too.
Fuel height check/adjust first, then vac sync.
