1974 CB550 exhaust stud
« on: June 28, 2012, 07:28:48 PM »
New owner with a newbie mistake.
Does anyone have any idea where I can get an exhaust stud for my '74 CB550? I snapped one putting the exhaust back on. If you know who sells them or if anyone has one lying around that they would sell a single to me I would appreciate it. I'll gladly send a few bucks in a return envelope if anyone has one lying around.

Thanks,
Ryan

I tried my ace hardware for one. They have the correct thread size, but not the correct length. Sometimes the local Honda shop will have one around. Might want to check them out.

I have a 75 cb550 and I used ones from ACE hardware. I guess they may be too long, but they seem to work fine.

Thanks a lot guys. I'll take it and check ACE today. For future reference, Do you happen to know the stud size needed for the cb550? One site (partsnmore) says 8mm x56mm  and another site said 6x40mm

The diagram for the '74 550 on servicehonda.com and motogrid say 6x40.

Thanks for the help guys. I did find the right size at ACE today and 6x40mm is what matches up, thanks. Now I'm having a hard time getting the original stud out. Trying a Locking wrench and PB BLaster but may try a craftsman Stud Removal Tool if this method doesnt work tomorrow.

Not sure if you mean you tried this but the easiest way to get that stud out is to lock two nuts together on the stud then screw it out carefully.

It snapped at a point where two nuts wont fit on anymore in the threaded area. I have it back together and it doesnt seem to leak with the one stud unbolted but I'll try to remove it again today or wait and get a stud removal tool . the vice grips werent doing much and i didnt want to snap it any shorter

Maybe keep on with the PB Blaster and heat? Or one of these:

I lol'd so hard... is this really how this thread ends? With that video so strategically placed at such an accurate time? I applaud you man, well done. This is a lesson to be had.

If you put that stud remover on the engine, it would rotate the entire bike.

This thread is so old...just saw the date. Man, 2012 was a good year.
