rigid brake line on front caliper
« on: November 27, 2006, 11:54:38 AM »
Hi all - In the process of putting on some sweet new stainless braided front brake hoses on my bike and rebuilding my front caliper, I accidentally busted the decayed old piece of rigid line that runs from the caliper to just behind the fork. The braided lines are just the right length to include this piece, so I kinda need one.

They had a pre-made piece at the Autozone that said it was metric and the threads on the nuts looked close, but they didn't quite thread in correctly and I didn't want to force it and f**k up my caliper. I could get a flaring tool make my own using the old nuts but they are so rounded off by the PO that it wouldn't be worth it. Anybody know where to find this piece? or at least what the thread on the nuts is? Its a 76 400f but I think these were all the same setup on the front brake.

Help - this bike is begging to be ridden!!!!!

Maybe check with bryanj as he might have the sizes you need to get. Bifta may also be a help as he has a 400 also.

I bought a new one for my 750  from the local Honda dealer for 10 bucks. You can probably get one for the 400 too.

Cheers

If you want/choose you can eliminate the hard line, and go straight from the front brake pressure switch to the caliper.

Thanks all. I ended up ordering it from BikeBandit.com. If I had ordered the new ss braided hoses myself, I'd have gotten enough to go all the way to the caliper (can you do that with a regular banjo?), but I'm just installing what the PO had already bought so I needed this piece. The line is all one piece (I have a nissin master cylinder which has it's own light switch, so no piece in the middle. But really, was Honda joking with a brake line that has five junctions to go less than 60 inches? Seems like a joke to me.

This bike is roaring and ready to go - but until I get that line it's not ready to stop.

As I was cleaning and rebuilding mine a couple of years ago, I thought something similar. Figured they needed one break along the way to incorporate the brake switch and I assumed the rigid piece was to avoid any possible flexing and associated chafing around the fork tubes, etc. Don't know for sure, just my guess.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Dont forget Honda, and all the other manufacturers, used cheaper, bigger diameter, more easily damaged rubber type lines so they wanted to keep them away from the spinning wheel - probably.
