Oil drop from K0 alternator cover
« on: September 18, 2016, 02:19:12 PM »
Hi All, I have a persistent drip of oil coming from my alternator cover (the very edge as I am always on the side stand) on my 1970 K0. The engine was supposedly rebuilt when I bought it but I do not have any firsthand knowledge if every oil seal was replaced, etc. I fully intend to remove both the alternator cover and the transmission cover on the next oil change; hopefully that will help me narrow in on the exact location of the leak. I'm afraid right now it's the crankshaft oil seal behind the rotor. Sometimes I think it might be coming from the heads of one of the two main bearing case bolts immediately inboard of the alternator cover, but still hard to tell.
Any advice or experience with this location for a dripping alternator cover edge would be appreciated!  Thanks!

Maybe it is the rubber bushing that carries the alternator wires.. If you can get a search to work, member johnie bugged that leak out and fixed it with ??? sealer. Don't worry.

Wow Kevin you have a great memory! That was back in 2007 on the KO. Was driving me nuts. Thought it was the tranny cover as it was dripping from between the 2 covers. Narrowed to the wires that run from the stator case. Used Permatex anaerobic gasket maker. That rubber seal is in 2 halves with the wires running between them. I opened the rubber halves up and put the Permatex between the halves and then also around where it mates with the cover. Been leak free since. Good luck with it.

Thanks guys - will definitely have a look in that area next oil change.

So it sounds like others have been having a problem with the web site search engine?  Everything I search for comes back with "nothing found". :-\

Found this tip for search:

Try this search term in Google, or in the address bar of your Chrome browser, works great. Substitute for the search terms you want, put stuff in quotes, add the + sign as desired, yadda. Works great.

I'm afraid right now it's the crankshaft oil seal behind the rotor.
There is no crankshaft oil seal behind the rotor, so don't worry about that; there is normally oil under both the transmission and alternator covers. Try to identify the source of the leak before taking anything apart. Clean the area of all oil residue, then dust it with talcum power or foot powder.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Exactly what Scotty said. You could have a small leak anywhere, and since the bike is always on a side stand, the oil will slowly migrate down and toward that cover. A nice clean engine is the starting point. If it is a leak from that cover, a new gasket is all that's needed, as there is always oil in there.
