Who regularly drives over 80mph?
« on: September 16, 2016, 07:49:19 PM »
i live in San Diego, the land of big freeways, and mostly use my bike as a commuter, so that means that pretty much every time I ride I'm up around 80-90mph. At about 90 mph the speedometer starts bouncing around pretty good!

I'm still on stock bars and I'm thinking I need to switch to clip-ons to get me in a better position against the wind. I was just wondering how many other people are high speed commuting with their 40yo bikes and how your bikes are setup?

Me! Regularly. :)

For bouncy speedo that might not be inside the gauge: look for a worn speedo cable, especially where it comes out of the drive box at the axle. They like to wear there, particularly when they were incorrectly set up to have too sharp an angle there. It is supposed to come out parallel to the fender stay, then curve gently upward to the frame and steering tree, no bends beyond that. Many times this angle is set up too sharp, then the cable wears out inside the fitting.

Also, take the speedo drive off the wheel and either disassemble and re-lube it with new grease, or at least put a little oil in there to soften up the old grease inside. Make sure the flat plate that drives the gearbox is also centered on the front wheel: sometimes these get assembled off-center a little bit, which makes the cable vibrate, which affects the speedo....

I ride behind a Vetter. Many don't like them, but I won't ride without one after 40+ years with it. At 105 MPH the windshield starts to fold over a little bit, but unlike the early ones (before the 1974 DOT-approved versions) it doesn't come back far enough to touch me in the nose! :)  And in crosswinds, rain, snow, sleet, hail, or bird-bug attacks, it is my best friend. I just rode thru all but the bird-attack part of this last Saturday, going up to the top of Mt. Evans. :D

I recently swapped the countersprocket to 19T instead of the 18T that has long been there. It makes 5th gear into overdrive, with 4th acting much like 5th used to.

I've been known to ton up from time to time.

Supersport bars arent as low as clip ons, but they work for some decent wfo sprinting.

Just don't go into the turns too hot now.

Dang 105!!  8) 8)  Yeah, idk if that would be as fun without any kind of fairing. Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely look into all those things. I'm really interested in this rear sprocket you speak of... so where did you really see the difference, only in the extreme high end, or do you enjoy 5th now more overall? Also, what bars do you use?

My bike pulls really hard up to 90 with plenty of power left to push it further, I've just not elected to push it past that as the roads really suck in SD and with stock bars I get a ton of force applied on my body. Our roads are bumpy and rutted all over, so the bike kind of feels like it likes to wonder at that speed and doesn't feel completely planted.

Like many I had a nervous speedometer. Many years ago I took the speedometer cable apart and lubed it with lithium grease. Ever since stable even at top speed.

i need to try that. i have a new cable but the needle sometimes goes bouncy. thought it may have something to do with the internals of the speedo but will try the lithium grease first.

i regularly go at 150-160kph on some stretches on highway and use euro style bars (similar to those that came stock with the 550 european models). they work fine for a while if you tuck in a bit. if you want to go for longer periods at such speeds an unfaired bike is not the thing...

My F2 still has it's factory bar on it while my kids previous K3 had the euro/superbike bar and in my opinion the euro bar was much more comfortable at interstate speed.

Im generally a law abiding citizen. But every now and then on a long country road I will get a wild hair and a need for speed even at almost 60 years old. Here is my tachs. So in these cases I am driving over 80mph ;D

I do. I like the lower stock style bars and have 400-4 bars on one of my 500s. Around town I can sit up straight, but out on the open road I lean forward to the balance point between getting blown back and not getting held up when leaning too far forward.

You weren't suppose to notice that. What a eye for detail ;D When I first posted these pics just wanted to show how easy these 750's would do the ton with plenty of speedo and tach left. Should of known if anyone here was going to say anything it would be you Stev-o. What are friends for right ;). Been meaning to change the cables or the bars back to OE since I've had the KO but just never have. Not sure what the bars are maybe superbike(very low rise) but of course they make the cables much to long and the reason for the crazy routing. Been that way for so long Ive got use to it and really don't pay any attention to it.

Well I'm my own mechanic, and I definitely have a beer or two while wrenching, so when the thought pops into my mind around 95mph I just smile and hope I didn't miss a torque haha

Not regularly but my Sandcast will go 95 indicated for sure. I wanted the ton but there was a T ahead and I was on the wrong end of it. For the long ride to Sturgis.

80+ seems to be the norm on my K8, but I live in socal and the cages like to run up your azz if your any slower, and around here 80 puts you in the slow lane.  I regularly am around 90 or so on my speedo to stay with traffic but I'm pretty sure its slow by at least 5mph.

Once did 120Mph on GPS with my K2, that's about top speed I think...
