I've worked with a guy for four years that owns a 78 Goldwing. It's not really my kind of bike but it's super clean. He rides it to work and promptly covers it up. He's not mechanically inclined but the thing has never given him a problem. About 2 weeks ago he comes in to my office and tells me that the bike is running poorly. He then tells me that he parked the thing last fall and did not drain the tank or carbs and I tell him it's probably just bad gas and to clean things out. He tells me he had to put $500 into the thing for a tune up and tires years ago and he's not putting any more money into it. Yesterday at the end of the day he stops me and tells me he's made up his mind. He's gonna get rid of it and asks if I want it. I tell him I kind of have my hands full with my 550 project but ask what he wants for it. $200. After some back and forth I ask him if he would want me to come and get it and work on it and then bring it back to him so he can continue to enjoy it and he says no. Just wants it gone. So I told him I'll take it for $200. I went down there this morning.

I turn the key on and there's no lights, no start. Nothing. He tells me it sometimes does that and sometimes it starts right up. Then he tells me he thinks it's an electrical problem because the headlight and tail lights don't work either. I get it loaded up on the trailer.



40 minutes later I'm home and before I even unload it, I grab a screwdriver and pop the side cover off and notice the positive battery cable is finger tight. After tightening it, it starts right up. Runs like crap but starts fine. I get it in the garage and notice the lights that don't work and start looking into it. All bad bulbs. A trip to the store for bulbs and that problem is sorted. Then I drain the tank and add fuel system cleaner and two gallons of fresh gas and start it up. Took it for a run around the neighborhood and about 5 minutes in it bucked real hard, fell on it's face and backfired and then....ran like a Swiss watch. I rode it around town for over half an hour. Not one issue. Idles beautifully.

I'm going to do a tune up on it and detail it but then I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. It might be a cool bike to take longer trips on. But it would also be cool to flip it and use the money to buy more parts for my 550. The thing sure is clean. This guy's dad bought the bike new in 78. He passed a few years ago and my friend (his son) took it. It has 36,000 miles. Here are some more pictures.

Think that motor would fit in yout 550?!  That would solve 2 things!

 That was a great buy. If you have the room you should just keep it for that price. Nice bike to have in the arsenal for long trips, riding the wife around etc.. Won't find another runner that nice for that price  ;)

Man that is nice. Always liked the design change, different tank panels, gauges, wheels, etc, etc. Great buy 8)

I really did consider it and it would be a great bike for longer trips around here but it's just not a bike I'm interested in. I honestly feel bad about flipping it but the guy I bought it off just doesn't have any interest any more. When I get a second bike it will be a dual sport (probably KTM) to explore the fire roads and passes here in Colorado. And...it will be EFI.

It really is a nice bike and it's been very well cared for. I just took it out in the sun and took some pictures that I will post but I need to figure out why my Mac isn't wanting to talk to my camera right now.

Here's some more pictures.


No chips, bends or cracks in this guard.


Fork seals don't leak and the chrome on the front and rear fenders is perfect.


The motor doesn't leak a drop of oil or coolant. The clear coat on the top of the heads and on the timing belt cover is little faded and that's the worst I've seen so far and it's not even that big a deal given the shape the stuff on my 550 was and it's only 2 years older. 


Gauges all work like they should.




Found this in one of the hard cases. The original warranty card from January of 78. Factory tool kit is there as is the original owners manual. Also have a Clymer manual. Have the stock mirrors (looks like these on the bike sit up a bit higher than stock) and extra tail and brake lights from Bates (still in the box with the original paper work) that are to go all the way across from hard case to hard case.

That's money in the bank mate. The PO isn't interested, you don't want it. IIWY I'd sell it with a clear conscience and put the money towards that KTM ;).

I've never really been into big touring bikes, but that's one nice bike. I would have to keep it.

Just thought of this, Riverman:   Wondering if you could mount a plow on the front and use it to plow the roads once the snow starts flying in a couple weeks?

You, sir, are a regular Andy Rooney. Truth be told...after last winter and the days I spent shoveling while sick I spent the summer looking for a snowblower that needed a little bit of work. I found a 2 stroke Toro that needed some carb work. A quick cleaning and it fires right up now.

Today I had 2 offers on the bike but they were not lucrative enough. One involved some cash and a running 650 Custom but I've worked on it before (a friend owns it) and it is BEAT. It spends the winters (in Keystone area) out in the elements. I should get the title tomorrow. Spent a little time cleaning it up today. I really think I'm going to put it on Craigslist as soon as I get the title.

I had a 75 that was bagged and Marklanded out, it was so ugly it was cool with custom paint and matching upholstery!!  It was a great bike and I would love to have another one.  I finally sold it with 179K on the clock and it still ran great without issues.

If I didn't live 1500 miles away good chance I would have 78 Wang to go along with my 77 Wang. Hey I like these old GW's ;)and this one is extremely nice. Not crazy about the big ugly Windjammer though ::) Good luck with the sell Chris and I hope it finds to a good home ;)

I had those Bates bags on my '77. They are heavy, but the GL can easily handle them and they are damn handy whether on a long ride or making a grocery run.

It would be a second bike that can't really do the things I want to be able to do with a second bike here in CO (like explore higher alpine lakes, old mining ruins, passes, etc.). I want to finish my 550 and the money from this would go a long way. If/when I get a second bike it's gotta be something like a KTM or BMW. I am bummed though because it is in gorgeous shape and it's got a cool story.

I'm just curious,as it's in such excellent shape,what you're asking for it? Would you possibly give a deal to a forum member ? I would love to have it myself but certainly can't as my small $ is already spent.
