Brake repairs
« on: September 18, 2016, 05:36:36 pm »
I made a couple of brake repairs on Saturday, just in time to ride to the All Clubs Day vintage bike meet in Stockbridge today.
Last time out I had noticed some front brake chatter. When I checked the disc post ride, it was dirty so I gave it a good wipe down. Later, I noticed that my lower left pant leg was spattered. I went back to the bike and split the caliper, and darned if the piston wasn't leaking.
The piston is original, the seal, pads, brake lines were changed 9 years, 20000 miles past, and it didn't leak for all that time, or any other time as well. I'm guessing as the pads wore, the seal came to ride on the rough spot on the piston and caused the leak.
The caliper arm was also original, and had shims added at the hinge pin to combat free play. I noticed a rub mark on the bottom where the arm hub been riding on the disc! I eyeballed about 1/16" up and down play at the tip of the caliper arm, too much in my book.
I contacted member Godffrey and got new parts including pads, refurbished caliper arm (no slop), phenolic brake piston, no more rust, seal from dealer, all installed successfully.
Beautiful day here today, great for riding, big turnout at Stockbridge, met Sean, saw and heard his Yosh equipped CB, lots of nice bikes. No leaks and good brakes for my CB, woohoo!

Knowing that my piston was rough, I went to Godffrey for the phenolic/non-metallic/wont rust piston. I was pleasantly surprised to get the caliper arm and pads from him as well. Also saw double disc kits in his gallery.

I also found a replica caliper arm at Yamiya $$$ and was about to put it on my Christmas list :)
OE part NLA at David Silver/partzilla/etc :(
Choice of Aftermarket or OE piston at David Silver.

I'm 63 and expecting to never again need to work on this stuff, maybe just flush the fluid once in a while.

Are any of you using the phenolic brake piston?
Anything to say about it?

I'm using two. As far as performance goes they work the exact same (some say they insulate the fluid from the heat generated by the pad on disc friction preventing brake fade...most of us aren't racing so I don't think this is an issue) but the benefit is in longevity. They don't rust or pit so they'll last longer than your bike most likely.

Hi Dave
What type of master cylinder did you use with your dual disc set up?
I used a David Silver early Goldwing replica one, it looks good but I am less than chuffed with how it works.

Hey Old Moe,
On my 550 I'm using a Nissin aftermarket 14mm. This one to be exact. https://www.ebay.com/itm/152060668622

I don't have any issues with using the stock 14mm sixe, I like the feel a lot. I'm using stock calipers, too.
