Hello all, I've decided to start a new build thread on here considering my previous thread wasn't too entertaining and didn't have much of a following. To start, I'm located here in the great city of Indianapolis, Indiana! I'm a Senior at IUPUI studying both Mechanical Engineering, Motorsports Engineering, with minors in Math and Physics. Enough of the boring #$%*.

I'm probably missing ALOT of things on the above lists. Now someone may say WTF is a broke college student doing building a bike like this hahaha. Being involved in the racing industry, as some of you know better than I, is a very tight knit group of fellows. Over the course of my 3 years in Indiana (moved here from Connecticut), I've met some pretty cool people and have built some relationships that have certainly helped. For example, I have the ability to do ALL of my own sandblasting and powdercoating for FREE, aside from my purchase of 2 lbs of Satin Black powder.

I started this project in February of my Sophomore year, and I'm a senior now. If you do the math you'll see that this project has been taking TOO DAMN LONG haha. But with that being said, this is a hobby, and I don't mind it taking this long. Progress has been very slow until now considering the above purchase list isn't exactly "cheap". At this point, everything is relatively ready to start piecing together. Hope this build thread is enjoyable for others. As a full time student taking 18 credits and working 20 hours at a bike shop, bare with me if I don't post everyday! Thanks Everyone!!!!!

Just my $0.02, but "built not bought" does not apply when you outsource and don't fab your own parts. In other words, unless you're John Britten, I don't subscribe to that saying.

Yes I suppose you're right on that one. I think I made that tag handle about 1.5 years ago when I first made an account here. Should probably change it! And I still need to figure out the various functions of this forum GUI.

You can't use the m-button with clip ons, so save the money and wire straight to the m-unit.

CalJ, can you explain why I wouldn't be able to use the M-Button with clip ons? I don't understand why my selection of "hardware" would interfere with electronic components?

Cafe Racer Fan, yes I have broken down the whole bike. I've been chipping away at this project bit by bit since February of 2015. I completely tore the motor down, split the cases and all. I've already replaced all seals, main bearings, con rod bearings, bored the cylinders, ported the head, replaced clutch pressure plate, replaced cam tower, replaced cam chain, etc. I pained everything with some good ol VHT satin black when I had everything apart. However, it slipped my mind to clear coat so the paint chipped here and  there when I bolted everything back together. As it sits, I just need to throw the top end on, touch up the paint and clear, and then get new jets for the carbs.

I have a very difficult Vehicle Dynamics exam on thursday, so I won't have  time for taking and posting pictures until thursday evening.

2 things to understand:

1 - the m-button must be used with steel bars to isolate its interference. Says so directly in the manual, and I know this from personal experience. You ew countless threads on this forum where I've made the same recommendation, some followed, some did not. Those that did not, ultimately relent to the recommendation after experiencing numerous "anomalies" with their controls.

2 - the m-button if installed in a clip-on doesn't really resolve the wiring from the other clip on, unless you plan only to have all controls on a single side? So there's little benefit to it in the end from a wiring convenience.

As a personal preference, and an inherent advantage to eliminating the m-button, if your wiring runs straight to the m-unit from the momentary switch, you can with little to no effort, figure the handlebar button with a simple position change of the wire at the m-unit. For example, you have 3 buttons on the left clip on. Initially you set button 1 to be HORN. After some riding time, you decide you actually want that button to be HI/LO due to ergonomics. Without the m-button, you simply move the wire at the m-unit and you're done. With the m-button, you must cut the soloed connection (2 times for both wires involved), change locations, solder, shrink wrap them back, and then test. My way, takes about 15 seconds and is foolproof. The other, takes about 30 minutes and may/may not be perfect. You decide.

The m-button is a neat idea, but not terribly compatible with our bike's antiquated ignition systems. There's a need to run full suppression wires for the coils/plugs when using it. You can see Bigsam's recent 915 build as a current reference to this dilemma.

Just trying to save you some headaches and a few dollars to invest in other more useful and valuable features, like the m-LOCK!  :D

CalJ, thanks for all of that input. Those are things I hadn't really considered or even thought about. Thanks for saving me both time and money, things a college student doesn't have much of hahaha! And as for the Keihin jets, I've read numerous times on this forum that people have encountered fitment problems with non-Keihin aftermarket jets.

Considering my big bore, 4-1 exhaust header, race cam, and ported head, does anyone have a suggestion for what size to start with? Thanks for any input!

Does anyone know where I can find genuine Keihin jets? I was looking into purchasing the "Ultimate Jet Kit" on cb750supply.com but I'm not sure if these are actual Keihin parts? Thanks

I've gotten to about the halfway point with the motor, Completely broken down inside and out, gotta get everything packaged up for a journey to Noblehops for some vapor blasting then it's time for the re-build.

As far as exhaust, I have a Delkevic and it's extremely nice for the price (let me know if you want photos/part #'s)... Polished stainless, comes with everything including mounting brackets (for center stand too!!!) and baffled muffler for about $330-ish. I'm going with a Moto GPwerks pipe on mine which is also super nice. I've never had a Mac but i haven't heard the best about them, can't speak from experience though....Although it will get you started. For about the same price (or less) you can pick up the Delkevic....just make sure you get the correct one for the style head your using (early cb750 or later 77/78 (mine)).. Best of luck, will keep an eye on this one.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and interest! It makes the journey that much more enjoyable when others are interested in what I'm up to. I've gotten an enormous amount of help already and some has really saved me from some huge headaches that I would have cause myself. Biggest thing tit so take your time and "measure twice, cut once"...ha-ha.

The Moto GP werks pipe is made in small batches so they're not always available... they are more expensive than the Delkevic too so it's really up to you. If money is not an issue (which being a college kid it proabaly is, however with that parts hoard I could be wrong)... Check out the HIndle 4-2-1 systems on "Ripple rock racers".... Absolutely sick set of pipes. Pricey but amazing.

get a photo bucket account (or flickr, or any image sharing site) and embed the link directly. Gives you a photo journal for your records, and solves the image attachment limitations.

Here are some pictures. They're roughly in order of progress. I never took a whole lot of pictures of what I was doing, but that will begin to change now that some of you fellows are interested in what I have going on!

The beast when I bought it for an expensive $450 up in Grand Rapids. Drove 4 hours for this sucker. Bought without a seat and an "oil problem"


The tear down began. Yes, I setup shop in my living room because the space wasn't used and garage wasn't heated.


Finding the oh so serious "small oil problem"

After having painted the cover with VHT's Satin Black engine paint and the Cast Aluminum for the head. Pretty pretty if you ask me!


Some porting done at work


Sandblasting just about anything I could get my hands on at a buddy's shop. Talk about knowing the right people.

Hopefully this all sparked some visual interest. Sorry for the scatter-brained nature of everything above. I literally just went through a picture folder and pulled out the pictures of some interest. Moving forward I will document my progress much more thoroughly.

That thing is coming together super nice!! Looks great! Love that it's right inside next to the couch, need a break... two feet to the left and take a nap...wake up and go back at it. ha-ha.

 How many cuts to take it to 836 ? Looks lije if you cut heavy the sleeve could move down.
